Last night we met and used up our last hour revising the draft. There was a good bit of work done to organize the text into body paragraphs. The trap that many students fall into when dealing with research though is that paragraphs tend to each focus on one source - a summary and quote with perhaps just one or two sentences intertwined in this source summary. Some of the paragraphs read as more summaries of sources than developed body paragraphs. We reviewed the topic sentences and summary sentences that would frame the sources as evidence for a particular main point and how that evidence relates to or sits in conversation with her claims. We noted all the places in the paragraphs where these sentences were needed as well as drafting some to model this kind of language. We also discussed incorporating quotes rather than just inserting them - this means using formal/informal signal phrases to introduce the source and in-text citations with page numbers. It is also a good idea to follow quotes with an interpretation of that in the writer's own words as it relates to the main point - to connect the quote explicitly for the reader, which is the convention for academic essays. I suggested she bring the essay to the writing center on 3/31 to have her citations and Works Cited page checked for accuracy.

The student and I met today to focus exclusively on the brand new final 5 pages of his paper. He didn't bring the revised version of his original 8-9 page "first draft," which we've been working on for the past 3 sessions, but he assured me that he had already made all of the revisions that we discussed at our last session. I'm hopeful that he did so, as there were a lot of small corrections (grammar and syntax errors), as well as additional quotes he needed to research and paragraph structure to rearrange. For this paper in particular, his professor seems highly focused on his personal narrative and its connection to the quotes from his sources. I spent the majority of our time on rearranging paragraphs, discussing with him about adding additional narrative (i.e., "How does this relate to you and how can you convey that in this paper?"), and ensuring that his quotes were appropriately analyzed. I'm confident that he is handing in a better paper than he would have without my guidance, but I also understand that his professor extremely particular in her grading, so I'm hopeful that his grade reflects the hours of work we put into this paper together. Overall, he is a pleasure to work with and has a good grasp of the material. It's most often his ability to convey his understanding of the material that is lacking, and this is what we spent our time correcting.

The student and I reviewed the prompts for her college essays, and got right to work. We brainstormed and discussed what she wanted to say. We got through two of the three known essays, but she needed to contact one of the schools to get their application. She seemed pleased with her work!
