Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Rebekah in Miami, FL
The student & I had only briefly discussed the ACT essay previously. We spent this session reviewing sample topics and brainstorming them. She gained good insights from our discussions, most particularly what it means to give a "critical context for discussion." As always, she responded positively to our interactions. She is gaining confidence in the ACT. As we discussed her past test performances, she does show an increase in confidence. I have asked her to do two more practice tests - one in ACT, one in SAT before her next test dates in June. Although she has done well on practice SATs in school, these tests do not include the extra time accommodations that she will get for her learning differences. These time increases will affect her most on the ACT, so I have asked her to do at least one test in each using the 1.5 time length.

The student and I used our review from the previous session to target specific areas where she feels uncomfortable with the SAT math. I suggested we work on word and story problems, and the student also wanted to tackle strange symbol problems. We worked rapidly through several pages of practice problems. The student has an excellent understanding of mathematical principles, so all she really needed was increased familiarity. By the end of the session, she seldom needed my assistance deciphering tricky problems.

In my second session with the student, we spent most of the time doing more reading practice together (that is the section he is most concerned about, especially the sentence completions). He had done a practice section, and we went through that; it was clear that the vocabulary is the most difficult part for him. Consequently, we went through again the most effective ways for him to approach learning new words in the month before the test. We also did several double-passage sections, practicing how to carefully get the most out of the passages before tackling the questions. The student is obviously very bright, and I think if he puts in the time over the next month he will see a score improvement.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Alonso in Miami, FL
We met this week for an extended period since last week she had an event to attend instead. We completed a few English vocab sections and then build up a words list to study. Most of the words didn't have clear roots so they just have to be memorized. In the math section we looked at a bunch of problems that used the reciprocal formula for slopes.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Eve in Miami, FL
This was second to last study session before the student will take his exam on May 4. He had completed a full practice test. His score for the writing section improved dramatically, from 380 to 550! His critical reading score improved due to his leaving some difficult problems blank rather than guessing. He is in good shape going into the test and I expect him to post scores in the 550-600 range.

The student and I started by going over reading and doing a few sections. I gave her tips to make sure she finished in the allotted amount of time. We also talked a lot about vocabulary and how she can improve before her test on Saturday.
