We've helped thousands of learners of all ages improve their reading and English skills including teaching English as a second language.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Steven in Miami, FL
We're getting closer. By the end of the session the student was consistently getting the first five questions right and the last five questions wrong out of a 10-question reading set. She says that the reason why this is happening is because of time and time pressure. We looked at some strategies as to how to do all ten equally well. For homework, I left her the task of figuring out what she needs to do to calm herself down during the back end of a reading set. We will go over strategies on Tuesday.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Ian in Miami, FL
This session we discussed the student's scores from his last ACT, which we had prepped for. We decided to use two sessions for targeted review in the areas of Reading and Science as the scores were lower than expected. I gave the student short pre-assessment without guidance and the results were roughly consistent with his last ACT. I re-introduced each passage type with shortened samples to model and then practice efficiency and accuracy in response to the data and questions. After he was able to complete these exercises without issue, I introduced more difficult (i.e. more data, confusing "trap" questions/answers) material and alternated between guided and independent practice. By the end of the lesson, he was able to show an 8 point increase in his projected score. Most of the challenges in the lesson centered around misleading questions and answers and multi-step relationships and comparisons. He should be able to bring his score up significantly if he can keep these in mind. Time management was not a problem and in fact was used very productively. I assigned an independently practiced section to confirm understanding and scheduled next session.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Heather in Miami, FL
Today, the student and I focused on the reading section of the ACT test. We started by discussing the format of the test and the pacing. Then we took a practice test and stopped after each section to discuss difficult questions. He struggled with pacing on a few sections, but after practicing a few passages his pacing improved. Finally, we made a plan for his personal strategy on the reading section. For the next session, we will review some math and English topics, and we will also develop strategies for these sections.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Joellen in Miami, FL
The student and I worked on ACT Reading. We started out by going over the structure of the reading test and a few strategies for attacking the section. We decided that it might be best for him to start with the Natural Sciences passage because he is so strong in science. That way, he can answer those questions and build momentum going into the rest of the passages. The student took a practice test, and we went over the answers together. Next, we talked about a strategy he can use for the last passage if he is running out of time at the end of the test. He can read the first and last sentence of each paragraph to familiarize himself with the structure of the text before moving on to the questions. We tried out this strategy on a few practice Prose Fiction sections. Overall, it was a great session and I wish the student the very best of luck on the ACT next week!

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Nora in Miami, FL
The student and I began by going over her second practice essay, which was much improved from her first attempt! She had included many more concrete, specific details to support her arguments, and as a result, her essay came across as better developed, with stronger evidence for her stance. We discussed a few points upon which further clarification or development would have been helpful to a reader unfamiliar with the student's local community and school, but overall, her writing showed excellent progress. At that point, we turned our focus to the Reading test. We first discussed the overall structure, format, and timing of the section, and then we explored a variety of approaches that she could take to help her answer as many questions as possible accurately within the very short time limit imposed by the ACT. We began with the prose fiction passage, which has fewer reliable time-saving strategies than the three non-fiction passages; here, we talked about the importance of reading the questions before the passage itself, as well as some ways in which she could use the questions to help her focus on what aspects of the passage needed close attention and what aspects she might be able to skim, or at least read more quickly. Once she felt more comfortable with her approach to the prose fiction passage type, we moved on to the non-fiction passages. For these, we worked on three main techniques: breaking the passage into manageable chunks (after reading the questions) and answering the questions related to each section before reading the next portion; reading the questions and then beginning at the start of the passage, reading only until she finds a portion that addresses one of the questions, and answering that question before resuming her reading where she left off; and finally, using the questions as a "scavenger hunt" list of sorts, and skimming the passage until she finds the information she needs to answer each question in turn, and finally coming back to any questions focused on the passage as a whole. Of these three approaches, we had time to practice the first two in detail on multiple passages; we agreed to wrap up with some additional practice of the "scavenger hunt" strategy at the beginning of our next session. The student continues to work hard to apply the techniques we discuss diligently, and she is making very good progress.

ACT Reading Tutoring review by Rishi in Miami, FL
We focused on the reading portion of the exam. We took two reading practice exams. First, he got 11 wrong, which projects to about a 27. Second, he got 15 wrong, which projects to about a 24. He finished both exams on time, which is a really good sign. I suggest that he just continue taking more practice tests. It is a finicky test where performance can vary greatly between runs. So it is important that he is confident in his method. We reviewed the answers by first allowing him to correct the ones he got incorrect, then look up the correct explanation in the back. This allows him to first search for his own explanations. In the next and final two sessions together, we will complete a full ACT exam. We will do Math and Science on Sunday, and English and Reading on Wednesday.
