For the last six years I have tutored and taught from French to physics and back again. As a bachelor's graduate with a chemistry/physics degree, I know full well what's required to succeed in those subjects. I also know how to face the endless standardized tests and leave the battle in victory, not resignation. I've been speaking French since I was old enough to read and I have a Russian heritage that can help out with colloquialisms and grammar. Languages and linguistics are fascinating to me and I don't get to speak mine enough, so please speak them with me!My physics background, as well as my years of teaching, means I know a disturbing amount of math (through advanced calculus). I am a current PhD student in Hispanic Literatures and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington, where I also teach Spanish to students as an associate instructor. I chose to pursue a doctorate in Spanish not only because of my love of the language, but also because I love teaching Spanish as much as I love studying it! I believe that anyone can learn a language, no matter their age or experience; all you need is a willingness to learn and to keep trying, even when you make mistakes. My goal as an instructor is to help students arrive at a point where they feel truly comfortable with Spanish, which means not only helping students understand the rules of the language but also how they might use it in their daily lives to communicate with others. Hello! I'm a educator and visual artist with many years of experience teaching and tutoring high school and college students. I have a BA in Political Science from New College of Florida and a MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design. While I'm a photographer by trade, I also have a passion for and expertise in Math and the Natural Sciences -- as well as French and Spanish, having studied and worked in both Paris and Central America. While I'm proficient now, I struggled with both languages early on, and understand the challenges of both starting a new language and in moving from a conversational to a more proficient level. I'm also available for ACT and SAT test prep -- and work especially well with students who are visual learners (though I have a wide range of materials and resources for all styles of learning!).
I've been a mathematician and tutor for about 15 years. I have also taught mathematics at the college level for the past 7 years. My research touches on the interactions between math and theoretical computer science, as well as number theory (largely the study of prime numbers). I've taught courses ranging from basic arithmetic up through linear algebra and multivariable calculus. The second most exciting thing about mathematics is that moment when something totally opaque and confusing suddenly solidifies into crystal clarity. It's the sort of moment that makes you shout "aha!" or "eureka!". The most exciting thing about mathematics is sharing that experience with someone else.
Having attained my bachelors degree in history, I would now like to spend my time on a job that pertains to what I know, and love.I plan on applying to grad schools in the following year, but until then I'd like to know more about pedagogy and historical representation. Tutoring seems like a perfect fit for this, although I'm aware I may be called on to teach more than just history.I've worked in classrooms dealing with various subjects and learning with the students is a treat regardless of the content being taught. Hello,I'm a retired teacher, but since I love teaching English and history, I'm staying engaged with students through one-on-one tutoring. I got my high school diploma from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA; my BA in Fine Arts from New College of Florida (the honors college of Florida's state universities) in Sarasota, Fl; and two masters in the Humanities from Saint John's College in Santa Fe, NM. Both colleges emphasized self-directed learning, collaboration, Socratic seminars, great books, intensive study and writing, and this has informed my own teaching style. I have taught as an English and history teacher in all types of schools: private, public, charter, and online. I have worked as a private tutor for English, drawing, and SAT Prep. I've worked with and tutored all kinds of high school students: ESL, ESS, at-risk, and dual enrollment in community college classes.I have a great passion for my subjects and a strong desire to communicate that to others. I strive to meet students where they are at, getting a sense of their strengths, challenges, and interest in the material so that our time together is as rewarding, interesting, and fun as possible. I see myself more as a coach or mentor rather than a teacher since no true learning can occur without mutual respect. My main focus is always to foster a genuine understanding, even an appreciation, of the subject. When students create their own meaning and insight, that's theirs forever. As a consequence, recalling facts and organizing information, which has to be done, becomes much easier. As a rule of thumb, my lessons begin with Socratic questions and speculative or analogical thinking to develop critical thinking and effective communication skills before going into the factual or technical sides of the subject matter after which students can demonstrate they've mastered the concepts needed to succeed on a test or essay. If a student is earnest, I will always go the extra mile for him or her.
I am a graduate student at Columbia University currently majoring in South Asian Studies with a focus on history and postcolonial theory. I attended New College of Florida where I received my bachelor's degree in History. I am an aspiring professor and an avid student of all disciplines. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary school to graduate-level work, and I have specialized for the last two years in working with students with learning disabilities. My preferred subjects are history, literature, reading comprehension, and writing, and I can tutor verbal sections for standardized tests including the GRE.
