Long Island CLEP English Literature Tutoring FAQ
A course in English literature is typically a standard element of general education requirements at many schools and colleges, even though many students took a similar course in high school. There are options to quickly move beyond such a basic requirement, with the College Level Examination Program's (CLEP's) English Literature test being a great example of an opportunity that could allow you to receive credit for introductory English literature courses based on the knowledge you've already gained. The CLEP English Literature exam asks questions on the material usually covered by a year-long introductory course in the subject matter. The bulk of the test is a 95-question, 90-minute, multiple-choice section that surveys authors, titles, and movements in English literature. The test also includes two writing assessments that ask you to analyze and critique English literature while also demonstrating knowledge of its broader themes and movements. Having read a play by William Shakespeare, a poem by Lord Byron, and a novel by Charles Dickens will not provide sufficient knowledge to do well on the exam. You must be intimately familiar with a wide range of authors and their specific works, as well as have a developed understanding of the broader English literary movements. When trying to attain that level of knowledge, studying on your own can be extremely difficult. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with CLEP English Literature tutors all across the country.
Tutors are gifted educators who hold advanced degrees in literature from some of the most well-respected programs in the nation. More important for your tutoring than their expertise is their devotion to working with students to achieve each person's personal educational goals. Because all tutoring is conducted in a one-on-one format, you can have your tutor's entire focus to address what you need from your CLEP English Literature tutoring. There is no one-size-fits-all plan of attack for any subject. As you study for the CLEP English Literature exam, you can work through a custom curriculum designed just for you based on your tutor's analysis of your current skill and knowledge. This involves using proven assessment tools to show what you are proficient at and where you need improvement. Exposing weaknesses at this point is nothing to be ashamed of, because your tutor will fine-tune the lessons to focus on these and enable you to turn them into strong points.
Your tutor can work with you to remember literary devices and themes if you are better at recalling the names of authors and the titles of works, or can help you learn to analyze the idiosyncrasies of seventeenth-century literature if you are more familiar with modern works. Each aspect of your tutoring can be customized by you and your tutor, with the ultimate goal being to help you learn what you need to know for success on the CLEP English Literature exam.
Preparing for the test on your own can be difficult. Plus, you may unintentionally skip over content you are not familiar with, or don't realize you aren't as proficient at as you should be. As a study partner, your tutor's services are invaluable. They are as flexible as they are experienced, scheduling lessons around your classes, work, and other activities, and at a location that is most convenient for you. Would you rather study in school or at a library? Perhaps you're more comfortable being tutored at home. Your sessions can be in person or face-to-face online. Whatever you decide is fine with your instructor, who has experience teaching in a range of environments.

Recent Long Island CLEP English Literature Tutoring Session Notes
Reviewed the student's homework, which consisted of the preliminary reading and writing chapters. Her performance confirmed my perception of her strengths and weaknesses, so I'll know what to focus on for the remainder of the summer. At this point, she has a good foundation of the material and is familiar with the format of the test, so I'm curious to see how she puts everything together. I asked her to take an entire practice test for homework, ideally in one sitting, to simulate the 4-hour test.
We did a couple of sections of sentence completion problems and then did almost two sections of writing questions. The student is very grammatical and should do exceedingly well on the writing section. I do want to continue practicing these sections to make sure that she stays fresh on them and scores to her full potential. She has also shown incredible signs of improvement in the sentence completion questions that we did during this session. She has really tweaked her thought process to best utilize the strategies on which we have worked. She seems to be gaining a lot of confidence in her ability to answer these questions even if she does not know all of the vocab words (and, honestly, who does???). I am very impressed by the strides she has made.
The student and I finished working through the science section of test 3, which she did very well on. We also worked through one English passage and one reading passage before reviewing systems of equations and substitution. I gave her a packet of practice problems, both algebraic and word problems, of systems that should help her work through these types of questions quickly. We then started working on the math section of test 4.
We reviewed the analogy and synonym homework I assigned. She showed great improvements on synonyms. We went over strategies to try when you don't know the word and then moved on to math problems. I'm trying to let the student work more and more independently so she gets used to taking the test by herself. She'll work on a section of problems, then we'll review and discuss it after she's done. She has math problems and vocabulary words for homework.
We had a chance to debrief after his most recent test exam on June 8. He did very well. His score in writing went up over 150 points. Over the next couple of months, we will work on his reading and math scores. We will target some specific reading questions and math problems in order to get those scores as high as possible.
Pacing and practice in small time increments, 1 reading passage at a time. Today's scores showed definite improvement to last week. Will keep practicing in this manner, as it seems to be effective for him.
