CLEP College Composition Tutoring FAQ
It has been said that all good writing is actually a matter of rewriting. In addition, all good rewriting is the fruit of much editing and review. Being able to evaluate your own prose with a critical eye requires you to deploy an impressive set of compositional skills that have been hard won through years of study and practice. The CLEP College Composition exam tests these skills to provide colleges with a snapshot of your writing abilities and to aid them in placing you in a writing course of appropriate difficulty, oftentimes skipping over unnecessary introductory classes for which you can be granted credit. While you are learning to write cohesive and communicative prose, you need a guide to help you proceed through the process of editing and evaluation. Let Varsity Tutors help you connect with a tutor who can help you master the CLEP College Composition exam.
Although you may have been communicating and articulating your thoughts in English for many years, being able to present cohesive arguments requires the acquisition and deployment of many linguistic skills. To evaluate your own writing and that of others effectively, you need to learn how to focus on argumentative, rhetorical, and source-related devices. Your personal tutor can help you learn to master these devices by providing you with an independent source of criticism and focus, making it easy to identify the areas in which you can most improve. Your tutor can help you gain awareness of the weaknesses in your arguments, and can assist you in seeing the ways that your prose could more forcefully express the points that you need to communicate. Through review focused on just the aspects of composition that it would most benefit you to practice, personal CLEP College Composition tutoring can help you prepare for the rigorous evaluation to which your own exam responses will be subjected.
Working with a CLEP College Composition tutor provides you with the opportunity to ask questions, as many as you need, to better hone your writing skills. A private tutor is an extra set of eyes that can provide immediate feedback on your writing, a unique benefit that is not found in traditional writing classroom environments. You can bounce ideas off your tutor, and see what they think of an argument you're interested in exploring through writing, or a thesis statement you've been mulling over. A private tutor can serve as a safety net that allows you to experiment with your writing and try new things without the risk of running too far off course. Regardless of what elements of writing you struggle with, a CLEP College Composition tutor can be of assistance. If you have difficulty seamlessly incorporating outside sources into your essays, your tutor can help you work on that. Or maybe you excel at crafting an introduction to your piece but struggle when it comes to writing the conclusion. Your tutor can work with you on improving that skill, as well. CLEP College Composition tutors are enthusiastic about aiding and watching students as they improve their skills and discover their potential as writers.
The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice. No matter how strong your background in English composition, a personal tutor can help you improve your skills in self expression. Don't allow your success on the CLEP College Composition examination to be put at risk by unfocused review. Instead, let Varsity Tutors help you connect with an excellent CLEP College Composition tutor who can help you to show your prospective institution that you have the skills of self expression that are critical to success in postsecondary education. Recent CLEP College Composition Tutoring Session Notes
The student is very diligent and always completes the homework I assign her. I reviewed the test with her and noticed she had a couple weaknesses in math: functions and geometry. I focused on those topics and hopefully she will improve in the future when she gets those types of questions again. I also found out that she struggles with the time limit on the reading section, so we discussed pacing. I also encouraged her to answer the reading questions as she read the text because that should prevent her from having to reread the passage.
The student and I had a great first session. We reviewed SAT essay writing (teaching him how to brainstorm and approach, and then practicing some real examples) and then started on some critical reading at the end (using problems he had trouble with).
I introduced myself and asked the student a few questions about what he most needed help with for this test. I then went over the basic way to approach the sections and we did a few practice problems.
We went over some Geometry concepts to assist her with the PSAT. Then we went over her assignment which was to read Ch. 6 with the tactics and strategies. We went over the practice problems from that session. The student completed a practice test section in 25 minutes, then we went over the 3 problems she got wrong.
We worked on a little bit of math, and the student did very, very well. Then, we turned to the reading comprehension, in which he has improved enormously since we started. He is really taking to the strategy behind the questions in looking for real context and substantiation to each question. We also worked on some sentence completion, which is another area where I have seen vast improvement in him.
We went over practice math sheet I made up for the student and then tried another timed sample test (40 min for 26 questions). She did finish the test this time and did well on reading comprehension, but all other sections proved troublesome and need some review (they've been stronger in the past). I assigned some refresher reading on the overall test and scrambled paragraphs this week.
