Writing Tutoring review by Erika in Round Lake Beach, IL
I arrived at 9 a.m., and the student and I first took some time to go over his 3rd grade test results, which indicated that he scored at a basic level with a score of 386. I attempted to have him recall any emotions or state of mind that he had before, during or after the test, but he was unable to tell me more than he felt "good" and "ok". My goal for him is to be successful and pass the spring test and, consequently, improve his confidence and test-taking skills. I chose to have him begin working on some reading activities found at online, mainly because it is much easier to preview the questions before reading the text, and the pieces of text tested on are more compact. We spent a bit of time discussing purposes for reading and the difference between reading for fun and reading in order to be able to answer comprehension questions. I related the latter to being like a scavenger hunt, since for a scavenger hunt, you must have a list of items for which you are seeking before the hunt to begin. Previewing the questions before reading the text is much like reviewing the scavenger hunt list before setting out to find the items. We completed one story together, and then I allowed him to complete one pretty much on his own. The score for the one we did together was 100%, while the one he completed on his own was 92%. I requested that he complete at least 2 more stories before our next meeting on 12/26.

Writing Tutoring review by Michele in Round Lake Beach, IL
I checked the students' homework I gave them in the writing workbook. They had to pick a topic (they picked, "A Day At the Beach") and write a sentence on what happened first, second, and last on their topic and then take their sentences and write a rough draft and then check any mistakes and write a final draft. We then covered words that sound the same but are spelled different and also have different meanings. We worked on hear, here, deer, and dear. They had to put the word in a correct sentence, as well as write their own sentence using the four words. They did a great job on this. I gave them homework on what we covered but using no, know, to, too, and two. I then checked their homework in the reading comprehension workbook. They both summarized the story, so it would help them to remember the questions at the end of the story. Student A only got 1 question wrong, which was a tricky question, and Student B got the same question incorrect, as well as couple others incorrect. We went over in the story what the correct answers should be. I had them read the next story and answer the questions. They both did a good job. I gave them homework in the reading comprehension workbook to read the next story, summarize the story, and answer the questions. When I was done with my session, I spoke to the mother and told her they needed extra practice with writing a story when they pick a topic, as they both didn't add enough detail, they only copied their sentences on the rough draft. So I told her next week when I come, I will pick a topic for them to practice writing including having them practice writing more detail. I also told her they did summarize the story after they read it.

Writing Tutoring review by Vinny in Round Lake Beach, IL
He wrote a persuasive paragraph with minimal errors and we spent a lot of time going over what I felt to be the most valuable thing to help his writing--varying sentence structure. The student had no trouble with the complicated structures and now that we know them, we are going to incorporate them into all of his writing assignments. Next week, we are going to tackle some reading comprehension and understanding literary elements (metaphors, themes, etc.) while incorporating the new sentence structures into writing.

Writing Tutoring review by Taylor in Round Lake Beach, IL
His task was to take three individual videos, study them, and emulate them to the best of his ability, and then reproduce them individually. We then had to take each of those three videos, re-study them and then combine them into one video doing a single take. However, we were successful in all of this because the student had put in real quality time over the weekend watching and pantomiming the sign language videos. His confidence and comfort level were both obviously improved, and he was able to put together a strong final project for the summer semester.

I am so thrilled that Student 1 likes the Douglas Adams books. I was able to give him more recommendations and let him take trivia quizzes. Student 2 is trying to win the Profiles in Courage writing contest. We went over past winners and discussed the subject.
