Reading Tutoring review by Erika in Round Lake Beach, IL
We used the tutoring/study room at the library, and I initially began working with Student 1 to determine his reading level and fluency. We utilized an online learning tool to complete a story with comprehension questions at a 3.0 level. Student 1 demonstrated excellent expression while reading, but he had trouble recognizing some words. He also skipped over words in sentences, and did not notice that the sentence became incomplete when he did so. I showed him how to utilize the read aloud feature in the learning tool so that when he is working independently, the program can pronounce any words of which he is unsure. He was able to answer most of the comprehension questions correctly. For the ones he missed, we discussed why his initial choice was incorrect, and how to eliminate wrong answer choices before deciding on a final answer. I indicated that before our next session, I expected him to complete the other two stories and question sets in the lesson on his own. We will also continue to work on his reading fluency and comprehension, and we will use the learning tool to monitor his progress. I then had him complete the placement test for the vocabulary unit, and he will complete one more vocabulary section before we meet again. I will quiz him on the vocabulary during our next session. I also had Student 2 complete a reading placement test on the online learning tool, starting at a 3.5 level. On the first story, he score 92%. I had him complete the placement test for the Vocabulary component as well, and I also gave him a vocabulary section to complete as homework, which he will be quizzed on during our next session. Both students were given login information in written form and instructed to complete at least 15 minutes of work a night on the online learning tool, particularly focusing on reading stories, reading information and vocabulary.

The student and I covered memoir writing. First I gave him a worksheet which included samples of memoirs and he had to identify what made them a memoir as opposed to an autobiography, then he had to write his own short memoir. The next activity we did was focused heavily in reading comprehension. He read an article about Isaac Newton, and as we read I asked him to jot down details from every paragraph in order for him to absorb all the information. Then he was asked to answer questions about the story and he at the time he was asked to answer a creative question that involved imagining that we were leaving without gravity and had to illustrate a picture of it. The student was struggling with details the most and I plan to work on that through numerous ways including close reading, stop and jot, personal writing and various aesthetic activities for support.

We continued work on reading her book club book and getting her to pay attention to punctuation. There were very few words she didn't know. We discussed the book's topic, people with disabilities. I told her to write in her reading journal about today's reading.

For today's session, we reviewed unit 2. This consist of the -am, -ag, and -at word families. Although the student had already learned them, it is essential for her to review the word families before we move on to blends and digraphs. Since there are a total of 12 units to review before moving on, we will be working on them for the next month. The student shows a level of understanding and proficiency. I hope that if she continues to practice, she will reach a level of mastery.

I am assisting the student in wrapping up his 2nd semester in Language Arts. We studied together and then he retook quizzes on poetic devices and argumentative essays. On each quiz, his scores were greatly improved. He still has a lot of work to do in a very short period of time, but I think it is doable. His biggest struggles are Reading and Reading Comprehension, which makes the task harder for him than most; but he has come a long way.
