Writing Tutoring review by Alexandra in Manhattan, NY
This week we worked together on her words of the week. We took a practice quiz and she got all but one correct! I also helped her to edit and write a speech she will be giving about the 2nd Grade Valentine's Day postal service. Her speech turned out great!

Writing Tutoring review by Lily in Manhattan, NY
This was my first session with this student. We talked about school and what subjects he liked (math, science). Then we discussed English-- what his class has covered, what they're working on now, and how his writing assignments have been. I looked over one graded essay to get a sense of his work. His content is there, but it lacks some organization and follow-through on ideas. They are currently working on debates in class and he will deliver a four minute speech on gun control next week. We created an outline to organize his thoughts and notes so far and then we tried another exercise for essay organization. I had him pick a favorite something (movie, book, food, sport) and he picked soccer. We worked on creating an outline for a persuasive five-paragraph essay on why soccer is the best sport. Once we had an outline, he saw how much easier it would be to write the actual essay.

The student and I went over a paper he had written for his class assignment. We went through the paper line by line and talked through his voice and style and made notes of any grammatical errors and or changes we wanted to make, being sure that when there was an error we understood what the error was and what needed to change. We worked a little bit on wordiness and how to make sentences and paragraphs more concise and we talked about person/number agreement in grammatical structure and how in a paper it needs to agree throughout. He did a great job, he did not passively sit back and just wait for me to find corrections to make, he was actively involved in the proof reading process and in wanting to make his writing better. We are going to work together on his next assignment and keep helping him craft his voice in writing and his skill at grammar.

Writing Tutoring review by Ivana in Manhattan, NY
The student had a persuasive essay to work on so we worked on improving his thesis and finding supporting facts and details. He had an outline to follow so we basically followed that guide in order to work on the essay and flesh out his ideas. He did really well this week. His essay was on lacrosse which is a sport he loves so I believe that helped him come up with a strong thesis and supporting details for the essay.

First, I helped the student with his vocabulary homework. I quizzed him on each of the words regarding meaning and spelling. Moreover, I helped him practice the ones he was struggling with. We also worked through some writing exercises together as well. I had him make up sentences using the vocabulary words that he had learn for homework.

The student has an essay due Friday for her sociology class. Last week, we brainstormed and outlined it, and she wrote it out. In addition to editing the writing, we focused on adding more sociological analysis and concepts from the reading. She earned an 83 on her philosophy midterm last week, and she was pleased about that.
