Today we worked on the chain rule and implicit derivatives. We also reviewed the material we have covered so far. He is making good progress and demonstrating good understanding. He is good at knowing how to use the rules of calculus, but is struggling at times to remember what the specifics of the rule are.

Calculus Tutoring review by Jessica in Manhattan, NY
Today the student and I went over implicit differentiation, related rates problems, and inverse trigonometric function differentiation. He did really well today, he really seems like he has been reviewing the material more on his own and came into our meeting with specific questions he had over specific topics in the book. I feel like he is beginning to grasp the material much more easily and if he keeps practicing like he has been doing he should be all set for Calculus II.

Calculus Tutoring review by Joseph in Manhattan, NY
The student and I continued practicing more difficult limit evaluations today in our second online session. For the most part, she had maintained her previous competency in each type of limit, but she did need some reminding of how to approach infinite limits of rational expressions. I also had to explain some of the more complicated algebraic manipulations, but she picked up on my explanations quickly. Next time we will move on to derivatives.

Calculus Tutoring review by Greg in Manhattan, NY
We started our session with some practice problems involving graphing f'(x) for a given graph of f(x). By the end of the practice problems, the student was much quicker at identifying what f'(x) looked like. I then gave a brief lesson on the Mean Value Theorem and how to apply it. She seemed to pick it up pretty quickly. We then went over the student's homework that is due on Friday. She had already completed most of the questions. I helped her understand the few that she either yet completed. She struggled a bit to understand her professor's notation strategy for setting up the product and quotient rules for derivatives. He prefers to let portions of f(x) be defined as u and v, which he then solves for u' and v' to plug into the product and quotient rules. She and I usually used f(x) and g(x) to represent those portions instead of u and v, so she was a bit confused. Once we sorted out that it was the same process, just a different notation scheme, she seemed to do better. Once we finished with reviewing her homework assignment we looked over the practice exam. We were able to go through all 7 questions on the practice exam. They weren't all obvious how to work through them, so we will have to focus on certain areas again in our next session before her Monday exam. She reported that she did get a 10/10 on one of her previous homework assignments.
