Tutoring review by Kimyen in Palmyra, PA
We went over math homework and Mock Trial material. For her math, the student was studying more recursion and rate of decay problems. She needed help translating the word problems into numbers and patterns that should could recognize more easily. She is very good at the math problems once should could understand what they were asking for. The recursion problems also dealt with exponents. She has a strong grasp on exponents but had misunderstood anything raised to the 0 power is equal to one. All of her problems that had to do with 0 exponents had 0 as the answer instead. I explained to her the difference and realized that she was computing exponents by multiplying things out instead of using "to the power" symbol key. I will be sure to bring additional worksheets dealing with exponents next time to see if she remembers the concept. We also worked on Mock Trials which she is going to be a witness in. She did her research on her witness and understood the case, but needed help to realize how the prosecution would attack her witness and how to prepare for it.

The student and I took a math practice test. We will need to work on her basic mathematics in future sessions because these are the concepts that give her the most trouble and lead to mistakes in solving problems. The concepts we will cover are: multiplying/dividing fractions, solving an equation, and graphing concepts.

The student started with his math homework, adding, multiplying, subtracting and dividing polynomial exponentials. He grasped the concepts fairly quickly, and only made a few systematic errors. After we finished his math, we moved on to science. I quizzed him on cellular biology terminology and definitions. He needed help with remembering some of the associations, but he says they are allowed open notes for the quiz, so he shouldn't have too much problem with it.

The student had a math worksheet and a paper to write which he completed. We spent the majority of the time filling out and trying to review for a Theology test he is having tomorrow. I emailed the teacher to see if we could get a copy of the next study guide at the beginning of the chapter so we could be sure to use the time to prepare for the test.

Tutoring review by Alejandra in Palmyra, PA
We mostly covered geometry in this session (angles, area, and circumference of circles), along with variable expressions. We learned the equations for finding circumference and area of circles, and practiced expanding variable expressions with fractions. The student continues to pick up concepts quickly, but needs to remind herself to check her work and thoroughly read the questions to glean what it is that the question is actually asking. She showed a lot of progress in the session alone, and I'm hopeful with more practice she'll have it mastered in no time.

Tutoring review by Violet in Palmyra, PA
In this session, we started going through the materials found on the precalculus course website. We went through the PowerPoints for all of the first quarter materials, including analyzing linear, quadratic, power and polynomial functions and the graphs of these functions. These were mostly topics the student had already studied. When we moved on to the second quarter, we started touching on topics she hadn't yet studied. We went through synthetic division and the rational zeroes test and she did practice problems on each. This session was very productive, and we are just about halfway through the course.
