How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The ISEE, or the Independent School Entrance Exam, is a test that is taken by students to gain admittance into certain prestigious private elementary, middle, and high schools that require its score for applying. For each age group, there is a different test level: lower, middle, and upper. If your child is trying to prepare for the exam, but they are having trouble focusing and grasping some of the material, Varsity Tutors can help find them a tutor who can guide their preparation for the ISEE. Philadelphia ISEE tutoring can be a worthwhile option for your child before they take the test.

ISEE tutoring in Philadelphia can help students study for the sections' content thoroughly. There are five sections of the ISEE that students are encouraged to study before the day of the test. These include verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, an essay, quantitative reasoning, and math achievement. The first three cover reading and writing, which will test students' knowledge of critical reading, identifying themes and style of passages, and writing cohesively and analytically. If you know your child needs help with their reading comprehension and writing, your child's personal tutor can help with that by bringing in practice passages and writing prompts for them to work on leading up to the exam. This can help your child familiarize themselves with the test, which can relieve test anxiety and help them feel more confident on the day of the exam.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in Philadelphia, PA
We had the last session before the student's exam. We spent the first part of the session reviewing vocabulary words from the previous session. We reviewed each of the strategies for the test. Then the student did some of the sections of the practice test to review. The synonyms and sentence completion went well, but the math gave her a little trouble. However, the questions she missed were only the questions she has not covered in her class yet. We reviewed how to solve them so she wouldn't have any difficulty with them in the future. Lastly, we reviewed what to expect, general test strategies, and what to bring on test day. I gave her a list of a few things to review over the week and a checklist for test day.

This was one of our last sessions with lessons. We did drills on: synonyms, sentence completion, numbers and operations, algebraic concepts, geometry, measurement, and probability. Both girls have the skill set to complete each math problem.

Math- fractions, decimals, word problems; Reading- Sentence Completion. He really struggled with changing a fraction into a decimal. We worked on several examples of this. We will continue fractions and decimals at the next session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Melissa in Philadelphia, PA
The student is very bright. During this session, I brought a practice lower level test for him to do so that I could get a sense of what things he really needed to focus on between now and the test. We completed two of the sections in this session (the other two sections we will do next week). In the analogy and sentence completion section, he only missed two questions (both analogies). He has made some flash cards of the most popular words that are used on the test and is working to review over them throughout the week. The student spends a good amount of time thinking about a lot of the math problems before working them through and a lot of the math he does in his head which leads to small calculation mistakes. At least on these two sections, it seems that timing is more of an issue than content.

ISEE Tutoring review by Ari in Philadelphia, PA
We began our session by reviewing one of the essays she had written in the allotted time period in a previous session. We went over the strengths of her writing as well as tips to improve her essay. We then went on to practice the verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning sections of the test in depth. In between sections, we worked on synonyms and vocabulary as well as mastering her multiples of 12 etc. Finally, we also discussed the set of the test and different tips for the test preparation and test day. The student did exceptionally well and is improving with each session.

ISEE Tutoring review by Andrea in Philadelphia, PA
Today was my first lesson with the student. I asked him some questions about what he did with his previous tutor and what he likes to do at school. He enjoys math, so his tutor worked on that with him, mostly. I approached math concepts with him by going through the math chapters and asking him to do a few problems every few pages until we got to things that were new concepts for him. Fraction division was new, so we reviewed that. He's good with decimals, and I gave them a fast method for converting between decimals and percentages. We also looked at ratio problems and geometry. I asked him to do a few questions from a practice test. He has a great attitude! Lastly, I looked at a practice essay he did for his previous tutor, I gave him some feedback, and we made a vocabulary study list for the upcoming week.
