Recent Thurmont Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Eric in Thurmont, MD
This session, we went through the problems the student missed on her most recent quiz. The quiz covered factoring polynomials and radicals. Together we walked through the steps in order to correct each problem. Then each problem was checked using FOIL and/or the necessary algebraic processes to obtain the original function. In addition, we continued our review of factoring radical numbers. By the end of the session, and after solving some rather difficult problems without assistance correctly, she had a huge boost of self-confidence. I asked that she continue to work through additional problems on her own that dealt with factoring polynomials and radicals.

Tutoring review by Mohamed in Thurmont, MD
We went over his last packet and solved problems on sequences and series. He had a quiz today and considered it easy, which shows progress. He also had the opportunity to learn how to use a graphing calculator to find terms of sequences and their sums, putting him ahead on the topic. I recommend some reading from the book I provided to him which has good examples on the topic. The session went great and we plan to meet next Tuesday.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Thurmont, MD
The student took a practice state test and did very well, using the skills we have been going over and using educated guesses to eliminate wrong answers when he can't figure out a problem within the time constraints. We spent the rest of our time going over the steps to solve any percent change problems. By the end of the session, he had really gotten the hang of it and was eager to do more practice problems. I'm hoping by next meeting we can move on to more complicated word problems, and start doing reviews of what he is working on in class. He seems more driven this academic year to do well in math!

Tutoring review by Michael in Thurmont, MD
The student and I continued working on her sentence completion skills, her writing skills, and her editing skills. The session was successful, I believe. She is an attentive student who has the right attitude and a boatload of self motivation. She wants this better score because she knows she can do better than she did the first time she took the SAT. I have a great deal of respect for a young person who is that mature.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Thurmont, MD
The student and I worked through approximately 20 SAT math questions and several SAT grammar questions. Initially, she struggled a bit with setting some of the math problems up and with solving them algebraically. She was often able to reach the correct answer through "guess and check," but we emphasized reasoning through the problems and setting up equations where appropriate. We will continue to work on this. She was more comfortable with the grammar section. Our next session is scheduled for next Tuesday.
