How can a Elementary Math tutor help you?

Elementary math will form the building blocks for your child's math curriculum throughout their years of education. Without mastering these foundational concepts, future math courses could cause your student issues. With no knowledge of their multiplication facts, algebra may be unreachable, and geometry could be virtually impossible. Elementary math is an essential skill that your child will need to know, so why not get them some supplementary assistance in this area? Varsity Tutors can help you find a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, elementary math tutor who could help your child pursue success in this course.

Elementary math introduces students to the concepts of numbers and their relations to one another. Learning to manipulate numbers through addition and other equations can be an exciting or cumbersome process for a student. While number patterns and measurements may come easily to some students, for others, it isn't a concept that clicks easily. Simply identifying even and odd numbers or learning about place value can cause many students to become confused. However, when a student works with private elementary math tutoring in Philadelphia, they can be taught in a style that complements the way they learn. Every student absorbs information differently, so if only one form of instruction can be used, the student may be less likely to understand. Your student's private tutor can work with them to find the method that is effective for them to understand the concepts.

Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Rebecca in Philadelphia, PA
The first student wanted to know about fractions, so I explained my fraction pieces and gave some examples. Then we continued our work with 1 more (after) and 1 less (before), counting by 2s, and patterns. The second student worked on place value to the millions, adding money, estimating, multi-digit addition, subtraction and multiplication, basic multiplication facts, problem solving with a map, and mental math.

Today's session went by smoothly. We completed the student's reading assignments; she has shown some improvement in her reading skill. However, she does need to build a little more confidence in attempting words. She has a habit of inserting letters to make other blended sounds. Afterward, we focused on subtraction and addition using flashcards and creating a game to help with her mental math. She had a little trouble understanding how to write the number sentence, so we will continue to focus on that next week. The remainder of the session was writing practice. Her writing is slowly improving. Next week, we will finish up practicing upper case letters and move onto lower case letters.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Jenny in Philadelphia, PA
The student had his math homework done before my arrival and we reviewed it for errors. We then worked on multiplication facts. The student uses multiplication facts that he knows in order to solve others he does not, which is an important skill to have while learning math facts. He did a great job at his addition math facts as well. We will continue to practice two by one digit subtraction facts. He solved 20 multiplication facts in 3:57, and 20 division problems in 5:00. I will be using the time to track his progress. We also did a page out of a math practice book that he had, on rounding to thousands and estimating the sum or the difference.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Dana in Philadelphia, PA
Today, the student and I began by completing her math homework. It involved adding 4 single digit numbers at once. The student does use her fingers to count, but she has great strategies and was looking for patterns within the numbers. She can add up the 4 numbers mentally very quickly and only had 1 mistake! We then moved on to reading. She is almost done with her Helen Keller biography and really seems to be enjoying it. We went through chapters 1 and 2 and wrote down important facts from the chapters to help her get a head start on her final project. We will continue writing down important facts from each chapter in our next session. Finally, we were able to play multiplication memory. The student really enjoys this game and the goal is to help her re-learn and hopefully memorize her multiplication facts. She did a fantastic job today! I did leave a reading/writing assignment last week with the student, which she was unable to find today for us to review.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Audrey in Philadelphia, PA
The student appears to be progressing nicely. He completed 3/3 subtraction problems correctly. I will continue to review until it is automatic. I reviewed steps to 2-digit multiplication and color coded ones and tens. He caught on quickly. He forgets to put the zero place holder in the second partial product. He completed a 3-digit times a 2 digit problem successfully. I reviewed decimals and he was able to identify places from hundred thousands to thousandths. His teacher remarked he did well on decimals today. I explored place value with money and he can correctly identify the coins and values. He could read and write money using decimal point. We practiced solving word problems and he could successfully solve word problems involving addition. I will continue to practice all of these skills for mastery.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Olivia in Philadelphia, PA
Worked with the student for two hours. We went over her homework assignment and practiced the problems she was having trouble with (mostly due to simple mistakes), such as multiplying numbers of different orders of magnitude (keeping track of zeros for 800 x 6000, etc.) and outcome probabilities when drawing cards. At the end of the session I tested her with problems similar to the ones we had worked on earlier, and she seemed to do fine.
