Philadelphia German Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors can connect you with a Philadelphia German tutor for yourself or a student in your family. Language learning can be difficult, whether you're a beginner looking to start picking up German or an experienced speaker working towards fluency. Private instruction can be a great way to pursue your goals no matter your current skill level. A personal German mentor can take your interests, aims, and learning preferences into account to develop a customized curriculum that targets your individual needs.

How can a Philadelphia German tutor near me assist me in the language acquisition process?

Although German is closely related to English in many ways, it differs in some key areas that can confuse learners. The guidance of an expert in the language can make German more accessible. You might be interested in international business and travel, or you may have a student who would like to learn more about German history and culture or who would like to study abroad in Germany. Unlike traditional classroom instruction, one-on-one mentoring allows a Philadelphia German tutor to design lessons based around your particular goals. If you do indeed hope to travel in Europe, your instructor could focus on key phrases and vocabulary that can be valuable when navigating train stations, airports, and the like, and can guide you through ordering food, making hotel arrangements, and other travel-related tasks in German. If you have a student who would like to study in Germany, on the other hand, their mentor could place the emphasis on writing and reading in academic German.

Philadelphia German tutoring allows mentors to teach at a pace that works for you or your student as well. Rather than being required to work at a rate dictated by a classroom instructor and having to keep up with classmates, when studying with a German mentor you can take the time necessary to ensure that you've understood key concepts before moving on. Whether you're struggling with German's system of gendered nouns or German verb conjugation, it's important that you make sure that you've grasped the basics before you advance to more complex concepts. Effective language learning requires you to build on a solid foundation. Otherwise, you may find that misunderstandings that you've incorporated into your German can impede your abilities later on.

Philadelphia German tutors can adjust their teaching methods to suit you or your student as well. For visually-oriented students, say, they can create sets of flashcards to assist with vocabulary, pictorial aids to help students associate words with images, or sentence diagrams to make German grammar easier to understand. The same goes for auditory learners or tactile learners; your German mentor could record audio pronunciation guides, for example, or put together German-language shopping lists for you to use at the grocery store so you can get a hands-on experience using German in the real world.

How can I fit Philadelphia German tutoring into my day?

Consistent practice is critical when learning any language, so it's important that you or your student be able to attend tutoring sessions with a minimum of inconvenience. This is why we offer a variety of flexible scheduling options. When you sign up you'll be able to pick between online or in-person sessions. Should you go with online instruction you'll meet with your instructor through our Live Learning Platform, a set of online teaching tools that includes face-to-face video chat. You'll also be able to engage with a virtual whiteboard that allows your mentor to take notes and draw diagrams, a shared document editor that you can use to practice reading and writing in German, a session recorder that enables you to revisit past lessons on your own time, and more. All of this adds up to a learning experience that can be just like in-person instruction, but which doesn't require you or your student to commute.

If you or your student would prefer to work with your Philadelphia German tutor at a physical location, they can arrange to meet you wherever you find yourself most comfortable and distraction-free. You could study at a favorite cafe, a public library like the Parkway Central Library or the Bala Cynwyd Library, your home, or anywhere else that's convenient for you. You also have the option of enrolling in an online class where you'll work with a qualified German teacher in a classroom of your peers. If you'd like to find out more about classes, reach out to one of our educational consultants. They'll be able to provide you with information about our offerings and answer any questions you may have.

German Tutoring review by Daniel in Philadelphia, PA

German Tutoring review by Lorna in Philadelphia, PA
On Saturday with the student we worked on the Vocab section of the SAT, and discussed the essay. We went through a list of the most common Latin/Greek root words, which can be very helpful with the Sentence Completion section. We discussed strategies for the two-blank questions, and when to guess/when to leave a question blank. For the essay, I explained the difference between the SAT and ACT Writing- how the prompts differ, and how the brainstorming/outlining for the SAT essay is much more critical (and often, more difficult). We went through about 5 sample prompts, and tried to come up with the type of examples for each of them that the SAT is looking for. We also talked about the importance of basic writing elements like transitions, a clear thesis, and a conclusion- and how these are more important than over-stressing about spelling/using big vocab words.

German Tutoring review by Suzanne in Philadelphia, PA
Today we worked on the SAT essay and more math. The student had written two essays over the week, one untimed and one time. We went through both and critiqued them. We also looked at the sample essays for one of the prompts to get a better feel for what the graders are looking for. The student then wrote out another essay, using the process suggested in the study guide. For this week, she will be working through some of the exercises in the book to tighten up her writing. For math, we reviewed one section of math that she had done independently and then started working through and second section.

German Tutoring review by Charles in Philadelphia, PA
Before we delve headfirst into grammar, I thought the student and I might want to briefly go over the phases we've been learning so far. We wrote a list of some of the key bits, and then we sought together to develop a phonetic representation of the German pronunciation so that the student, in my absence, can work on his speaking, etc. For next week's lesson, I told him to start a couple of online exercises pertaining to the dative/accusative cases.
