How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

As your child nears the end of their high school career, they may be starting to think about college options. Along with college preparation, comes the PSAT. While this exam is used as preparation for the SAT, it is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). This means that if your child does well on this exam, not only is that a confidence booster for the SAT, but it can also qualify them for a scholarship. Should your child perform well on the PSAT (within the top five percent in the state), they may qualify as a Commended Scholar. This is an achievement highly recognized by universities and may result in a scholarship for your student. There is also a PSAT 8/9 and a PSAT 10 that are used to track younger students' progress. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an experienced PSAT tutor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who can work around your family's busy life and help your child study for any version of this exam. The tutor can even work with your student online.

Philadelphia PSAT tutors can help your child adeptly prepare for the exam. They can offer your student practice exams to help hone in on the areas that they really need to spend the most time working with. Once they have found the area or areas that your child needs to work on, they can develop a customized study plan made just for your student. The exam has three sections – an evidence-based reading section, a writing section, and a math section. The evidence-based reading section is timed for 60 minutes; the writing section is timed for 35 minutes, and the math section is timed for 25 minutes without a calculator and 45 minutes with a calculator (70 minutes total for the entire section). Your child's tutor can practice timing each section for your student as they take the practice exam. This will give them a chance to see what it will be like on test day. They can then cover any areas they missed on their practice test with their tutor, receiving explanations for wrong answer choices. For the writing section, this offers an added benefit, as there are no answer keys for this section. Their tutor can provide them with immediate feedback and tips for their essay.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Courtney in Philadelphia, PA
Today both students completed a full-length, timed practice test. Before they began, Student A and I discussed some of the strategies she learned at a recent review session held by her school. I was pleased to note that she saw many overlaps in strategies and felt like she benefited from the session. Both students stayed within the time limit. I made sure they understood that on test day they would likely work a bit faster due to the adrenaline of taking the real test. In a quick review of their scores, both are scoring at least "Good" and mostly "Above Average" in the sections (looking at raw scores). Next week we will convert the scores to see how they compare to previous practice tests.

PSAT Tutoring review by Steven in Philadelphia, PA
I met with the student for our final session of SAT tutoring. Once again I tried to mimic a test environment by timing them taking practice section on all three parts of the test. They did reasonably well on all three practices. I ended the session by talking about the proper test taking mindset. I encouraged them to view the test as less of an obstacle and more as a challenge.

PSAT Tutoring review by Chloe in Philadelphia, PA
For homework the student had finished one of the practice tests (about 5 or 6 sections I think) and she didn't miss a single verbal question. We spent the whole time on math, and I gave her copies of the list of bullets from my book on basic math rules (i.e., 1 is not considered a prime number).

The student and I first did 3 grammar worksheets together. I noticed he needed to work on verb tenses and some comma issues, so we discussed those. Then we reviewed a section of writing for the PSAT. His test is Wednesday so he is supposed to practice some more of the questions before the test.

PSAT Tutoring review by Ami in Philadelphia, PA
This was our last session before the student takes the PSAT tomorrow, so we worked out of the booklet that she received at school that has drills as well as a full-length practice test. We then went through a few more practice math sections in another review book.
