AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +20 Subjects

As a tutor, I want to get to know the needs of the students. Do they prefer to improve their accent? Are they beginning to learn a language or the subject? What are their goals for our sessions? These types of questions are important for a student and tutor in order to best achieve for both. My approach is hands on, and I always like to find different methods to learn and remember the subject. Every student's learning capability is different, therefore I do not employ any cookie cutter method. I will personalize each lesson plan based off the students strengths when it comes to learning.

I live in Madison, New Jersey, and I work in a veterinary clinic in Secaucus, New Jersey. I tutored primarily during the four years I attended Davidson College, an elite four star, four year, private liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina, where some of my pupils were local high school students who sought help in French and French history. My primary areas of expertise in tutoring are in French, Genetics, ACT, SAT, GRE, Spanish, German, and Dutch. I took Genetics at Columbia University, NYC, and I have lived for over four years in the countries where these languages are natively spoken.I am well versed in tutoring for the SAT and ACT because I graduated high school with a GPA of over 4.0 and was ranked in the top ten of my class in Madison High School, which in turn was ranked in the top ten high schools in the state. My SAT scores are listed at the top of the page. I speak 5 languages English, French, Spanish, German, and Dutch. French is clearly the next subject that I have comparable experience and background in. I received a 5 on the French AP exam, a 790 out of 800 on the French SAT II subject test, and in 1998 I scored first in the Mid-Atlantic region and third in the nation in the national exam conducted by the American Association of Teachers of French. I was then invited to France for an all expense paid two week vacation where I attended two World Cup games and was one the guests of the President of France at the time, M. Jacques Chirac, at a garden party in the presidential palace in Paris. I also wrote a 32-page French thesis in the last course of my French Major at Davidson College, NC. which summarized the influence of French literary views over North African novelists, especially Tahar Ben Jelloun in the post-French-colonization era in the 1920's.As for my expertise in Genetics, SAT, GRE, and Biology, I have a BS in Animal Science from the College of Biological and Environmental Science at Rutgers University, and I received a B in Genetics at Columbia University in the labs where the field of genetics was born with the study of Drosophila flies. My proficiency in tutoring in Biology is also exemplified by a 640 in the Biology SAT II Subject test. The two semesters during which I attended an American professional veterinary school in Oklahoma taught me a lot about stress in academia. My success in Spanish stems from the translating that I perform between Hispanic clients and staff members at the veterinary clinics I work at. I then completed my Spanish studies when I traveled between cities in Chile, South America working in an animal humane hospital and eventually getting accepted into the national veterinary school in Valdivia, Chile, L'Universidad Austral de Chile. I also received the German National Heritage Award combined with a partial scholarship to college, which was awarded to only one high school senior a year.

College English Tutor • +15 Subjects

My interest in teaching languages began at a very early age for me, even if I was not conscious of it at the moment. Due to the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico, I was exposed to English as a second language since the beginning of my formal education. This is when it all began. As I grew up, I became aware of the incredible benefits of being bilingual. I could read, write, and speak in two languages. Fortunately it wouldn't be just two for too long.Arriving in college naturally expanded my horizons. It was there when I realized how much I love the atmosphere in a classroom. The exchange of ideas between a teacher and a student became fascinating to me, and I was suddenly aware of how important this is for the proper function of our society. During my second year of college, I was introduced to the French language, and I was so intrigued by the possibilities offered to me by a third language that I decided to major in French Language and Literature. Thanks to this decision I have had the most incredibly enriching experiences, including a semester abroad in France. It was there when I knew that discovering another language meant discovering another culture and another way of viewing the world, which has been a very sensitizing and enlightening experience for me. I believe that this is something everyone should be exposed to, especially in the times that we live in, where globalization seems to be the order of the day. I also believe that teaching will be my way to help others expand their world as I have.Pursuing a Master's degree, I decided to enroll on the Middlebury Language School program, which gave me not only the chance to study in a French university at the graduate level, but also my first experience as a teacher. I worked as a teaching assistant for the Department of English at a local institute of technology. Through teaching French students, I began to understand the benefits and complexities of being a teacher. How rewarding and how challenging it can be. Through the useful tool of teaching journals, which were required of me as a part of my internship, I learned to self-examine and self-criticize in the hopes of becoming a better teacher.Immediately after, I was offered the opportunity to teach middle school French and Spanish at an excellent school in New York City. These past two years as a middle school teacher have taught me the importance of certain skills or traits that I believe are essential to any teacher at any level: patience, determination and dynamism, among others, which have proven quite effective in my classroom. Moreover, as a faculty member, I have learned the importance of teamwork when it comes to achieving collective success.Overall, these opportunities, which I have been most lucky and blessed to have, have only solidified my interest and willingness to continue to pursue a career in teaching. Sharing of everything I have learned as a language student and teacher is a priority for me, and I believe that tutoring is a great way to achieve my goals.

I have been tutoring children for the past 5 years across a variety of different age levels and academic levels. My favorite subjects to tutor are mathematics, Spanish, French, reading, and economics.
