Math Tutoring review by Morenike in Lemont, IL
We strengthen her skills of working with exponents and radicals. She has a little trouble simplifying expressions with a power under a radicand but after a couple of practice problems she has a better understanding. We completed a lot of practice problems writing radicals as rational exponents and vice versa and simplifying radical expressions.

Math Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Lemont, IL
The student had some practice sheets on for finding the area between two curves and volume of different types of solids from today's class. We went through the problems that she wasn't able to get in class. We talked about how to decide which method for calculating volume was needed based on the wording of the problem and how to visualize or sketch the graph in order to help solve it. The student is becoming more comfortable with these problems as we continue to go through different problems step-by-step.

Math Tutoring review by Jaime in Lemont, IL
This evening, the student and I first reviewed how to factor quadratic expressions where a=1, as well as when a is greater than 1. He did not struggle with this concept once we went over an example of each type. We discussed how you can tell if a quadratic expression is factorable by examining its graph. Next, we discussed limits and what they actually mean in relation to a function's graph. We practiced solving limits through substitution, graphing, and examining the function's table. We talked about how the student can utilize factoring to help solve limits. Lastly, we worked on finding a function's derivative through implementing the average rate of change formula. The student was receptive to the information we talked about and seemed to be building a strong understanding of the material we covered during our session. I shared with him different ways he could double-check his answers through examining a function's graph and table of values. I left him with 8 problems to work on. We will be reviewing them at the beginning of our next session. Despite the fact that average rate of change is a relatively new topic for the student, I feel that he is picking it up quite nicely.

Math Tutoring review by Darren in Lemont, IL
This afternoon the student and I worked on preparing for tomorrow's math test by going over his review sheet. He had identified 3 (of 20) problems that he wanted help with, and he had erred on two other problems (failing to notice a "not" and using radius instead of diameter for circumference). The problems that he identified all involved dividing decimals, and in going over how to solve those we also worked on translating decimals into fractions and solving instead through that avenue. He was pleased when we could reword one problem that asked for the coordinates of the fourth vertex of a parallelogram to ask instead for ONE of the (3) possible sets of coordinates. At the end of our time, we briefly went over some grammar and spelling errors in a short answer English assignment.

Math Tutoring review by Bernice in Lemont, IL
Today, the student started with her ideas of what she would like to improve on in the area of Math. They were similar to my goals for her, so I added that I would like her to take more time to read a story problem, understand what she needs to find out, draw a picture or representation, and an equation. We talked about how she needs to check her work to see if her answer makes sense. Through 2 pages of work she had already worked on, we reviewed her questions. I asked her questions to show her that she can use the basics and go from there. Through steps, she worked out each problem and she was able to see that she could find the answers. I encouraged her to take her time and that I was not rushing her. She worked on practicing reading 6 digit numbers correctly, and then we reviewed the idea of time. I told her that next Monday, we would definitely work on multiplying larger numbers, which is her goal. I left both addition/subtraction and multiplication/division story problems for her to work on before we meet again.
