Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Lemont, IL
Since the student had just taken a physics test and her class had barely started the next session, we focused more on studying calculus today. We reviewed the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, finding the area under a curve using various methods, and finding the area between two curves. We went over how to determine which curve needed to be subtracted from the other to find the area between them by using graphs as well as tables of the graphs generated by a graphing calculator. We reviewed how manipulating the bounds of an integral changes the output, and how to determine the bounds on an integral when finding the area under or between curves. The student is doing well with most of these topics, and only needed a little prompting when we reviewed some of the approximation methods for finding the value of a definite integral.

The student had homework on conditional probabilities left over that we went over for correctness. Afterwards, we went through problems in the book that reinforce the material that she is currently learning and has already learned thus far since the exam. The student is doing really well with probability. I feel that she will excel through this chapter.

Statistics Tutoring review by Lora in Lemont, IL
Today in school the student took the math state assessment (with calculator). Tomorrow he takes math state assessment (without calculator), so we completed practice problems. After each problem he completed, he was able to take a 1 minute break by playing a division game that I sent him the link to. When we came across a practice problem that involved comparing fractions, he was stuck: I walked him through basic fractions to decimal conversions and we wrote out easy decimals (i.e.: 1/2=0.5, 1/8=0.125, and so on). After writing out all the decimals, he was able to complete the problem. Before leaving, I gave him additional work to do tonight: fill out fraction to decimal conversions for: 1/2s, 1/3s, 1/4s, 1/5s, 1/8s, 1/9s, 1/10s. I talked to him about getting a good night's sleep, a good breakfast, and not stressing for tomorrow's test!

Statistics Tutoring review by Shanae in Lemont, IL
We completed the review of the math chapter on Statistics and Probabilities, including 2 sections that have not been covered in class. The student understands the concepts extremely well. We also practiced vocabulary, which I feel he will know by test time. We reviewed contractions - LA - of which he has a pretty good grasp. We also did some brainstorming for an essay he is writing. The student is going to continue his daily minutes of reading.

Statistics Tutoring review by Nicholas in Lemont, IL
Today the student had a quiz on areas and perimeters of triangles but we reviewed areas of trapezoids (I assume this will show up on a future quiz). The problems dealt with dealing with the different values of the two bases to find the area. The student struggled on his worksheet with the concept of finding the average of two different bases, but he eventually got the hang of it. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let him know that he needs to be careful with identifying the shapes and understanding that rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids all need to be handled differently. I left the student with a few additional trapezoid area problems to tackle. Wins throughout the session, particularly in the second half.
