I have been tutoring and teaching for over ten years; I love helping people improve themselves, in academic subjects and on tests! I'm a filmmaker and photographer as well. I've made two documentary films and published fiction and poetry, and traveled to over thirty countries on five continents, so I have a lot of life experience that I bring with me to tutoring.My exposure to the SAT began when I got the highest SAT score in my school district when I was a junior (without tutoring, even!). I started tutoring the Verbal side of the SAT in Los Angeles in 1999. Then I branched out into the SAT Math and then into academic tutoring in many subject areas. I was tutoring celebrity kids in Malibu mostly at that time. Since then, I've tutored students from 1st grade to college in many different academic subjects, and always continued to tutor the SAT as well.

I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I taught Reading, Phonics, Spelling, Math, Science and Social Studies.Upon graduation I chose to move to the great state of Oregon, since my move I have been working with preschool students ranging in age from 2-5 years. At this time, I am teaching Phonics, Math, and Science.My favorite subjects to teach are Math and Reading. I enjoy seeing the light bulb come on during Math lessons when the problem "clicks" for a child. Reading has always been one of my favorite subjects to teach because you are contributing to a student's academic success in life. We have to learn to read so we can read to learn later in life.

Education is the foundation of success. Everyone can be a great student provided they get the support they need. This means that every single person has the capability to be successful. I do not believe that anybody is "bad at math", some people simply learn in different ways or have not been given the chance to fully engage the subject to understand completely.I believe in teaching holistically, teaching understanding; I believe it is most important to understand the material on your own. Someone can tell you how to answer a problem, but the student will only progress when they can reach the solution on their own. I enjoy patiently helping a student discover their own path to the answer. With someone to help out if the student deviates from the right direction, I believe each and every student can achieve their learning goals.Since graduating from Connecticut College in 2010, I have worked as a teacher to students of all ages: from 3 on up. I have taught in the US, in China, in classrooms, at summer camps, in the outdoors, all over. I have a liberal arts background. I graduated with a focus on Chinese language, but studied history, philosophy, math, science, art, music, and literature among other subjects.I look forward to helping you find the success you know you can achieve.

In 2019 I served as an instructional assistant for Portland Public Schools in a Special Education resource room, working with students one on one and in small groups. Being there for kids to encourage and see their growth as students is a real joy to me. I seek to continue this tutoring work both online and in person.

My tutoring philosophy is that each student learns differently and has different needs so I try to adapt any tutoring to the student.
