The student came with a list of material drawn for the two short stories which he will be comparing. We went through this list, and added to it, while organizing the material into an outline form. While we did this, we discussed the material, gathering together more material for his essay. I gave a very basic outline formula for writing short essays (the assignment being four to six pages). As we progressed, he was able to write as ideas came to him, so that largely towards the end of this session he was writing while I gave him a few suggestions on ideas to consider while he writes from the stories. The student made excellent progress on his rough draft. I asked him to continue writing over the weekend, and we plan to meet again on Monday, to review and edit what he has written.

The student and I had a great session. He had done a lot of work on his essay, and he finds that once he gets on a roll it is much easier for a lot more writing to get done. I think he was very encouraged by this, and he should be. He has shown marked improvement in remembering rules of punctuation, and he can turn out much more writing than he was previously able to. We started on a new genre this time, narrative nonfiction. I helped him outline and begin writing a based-on-a-true-story episode. He now has two projects that he can work on depending on his mood, and I think this will help him get more done. He still really needs to work on his typing skills.

The student had completed a thesis statement and outline for his upcoming essay on Tennessee Williams in his English class. We thoroughly reviewed it, and I asked clarifying questions to test the validity of his arguments. His basic thesis was that the pattern of hypocrisy and immorality in two of Williams' plays are a microcosm of the hypocrisy and immorality of humanity. To that end, his first body paragraph pointed out examples of that facade of morality in the two plays. His second paragraph, however, needed some work. He is going to have to search for personal or historical examples of the immorality of people in William's life, and use these stories to show how Williams reflected that reality in his plays. We'll look at his rough draft by next week. Today we also touched on ACT Reading strategies, including the skill of skimming. I demonstrated my approach to ACT Reading questions, and he performed one section.

The student did well to write a short summary of a few pages of the space we read last time. Today we read a book about volcanoes and took notes about each chapter. From the notes we took, the student will be writing a short summary from his notes up to page 24 in the book. Next week we will work on writing a summary together, which will improve his confidence in writing on his own.

Today, the student and I began working with a transition word reference sheet, and we reviewed her optional homework, which was to complete a daily writing session of one or more sentences. As I reviewed her work, she began work on a writing prompt. I used her optional homework as an assessment tool, and determined that for the next session, we will focus on tense and pluralization, commas, and sentences with additional subjects. Within her prompt response, she used three transition words and was able to successfully respond to the prompt. Next, we began work on an authentic text exploration called "Summer Water and Shirley" by Durango Mendoza. For the first segment, we chronologically categorized the events together. Next, she read an additional segment and then worked independently to summarize the combined segments that we had read today. Afterwards, we worked on combining the sentences in her summary to create a more concise summary. To build cultural background knowledge, we began to read "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" together. We read the first page slowly, and I asked her to explain the events on the page to me. We talked out the tough vocabulary and word choices. Next, we finished the first chapter, discussed the events that occurred, and explored some colloquialisms used. We made plans to work on building vocabulary through reading, through writing pieces, and by exploring word choice substitutions at our next session. Our goal is to write two short pieces in the next session. The student expressed an interested in borrowing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the public library, so we will continue to discuss this text at our text session. She will also continue her daily writing practice.
