The student and I started off by looking over his previous history test. We worked on identifying traps in multiple choice questions. Following this, we studied for his Math test, specifically square roots and the Pythagorean theorem. I am optimistic as to his performance on the test.

I worked with the student on poetry again. We focused on breaking down the poem to grasp what the theme/message is. I also had her look at why the author would write the poem and why the poem has purpose. She still doubts herself in this area, but I am working on building her confidence. With poetry, we also discussed diction and why certain words are used as well as their purpose. Since we went over all of this together, I plan to give her a "quiz"ù on poetry (she was informed of this) during our next session. I spent the second portion of the session on argumentative writing. I used notes and terms that were provided by her teacher so that she was on the same page as her classmates with all the information that would be needed. Once the review was complete, I had her start working on an outline for a practice essay. She got stuck on how to form a thesis, so I taught her what was needed and how to word the thesis. I left her with the homework of finishing the essay outline. I have a feeling that argumentative writing is a stronger area than poetry for her and she will feel more comfortable in that area.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Emily in New Haven, CT
Today the student and I continued our work on his essay. The first thing that I noticed when I began to read through it was that he had his quotes and facts, but not much commentary in his first paragraph. One of the things we had discussed when outlining the format was that each fact should have two sentences of commentary on it. He also did not seem to understand that his "general truth" statements counted as concrete facts and he should write commentary on them. As we began to go through his paragraph to isolate his three historical facts, I tried to elicit from him where we needed to add things on, clean up sentences, etc. He struggled with linking words/phrases (because, and, so, therefore, due to X, another X, also, for example, but). He either didn't know he needed a linking phrase or he used them incorrectly. Many times he used "but" when he wasn't expressing a contrast, for example. This is something we can work on in future lessons. For his homework tonight I asked him to finish his work cited/references page and print out a copy of the essay. I asked him to look over the printed copy and search for mistakes in grammar, punctuation, or sentence construction. Tomorrow he and I will expand his paragraphs and ensure that all required elements for the paper are met.

The student and I went over direct and indirect objects for his upcoming final. We started by going over the two topics separately and then together. I also gave him some practice sentences to identify both.
