Cranston CSAP/ TCAP Tutoring FAQ
If your student is attending public school in Colorado, he or she will need to take Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) during grades three through ten. The assessment is designed to provide teachers with a detailed analysis about each student's academic performances, and to help Colorado teachers provide their students with the most effective instruction possible. The current version of the TCAP consists of a Mathematics section, a Reading section, and a Writing section. In most grades, each section is presented in three sessions of three hours each, resulting in approximately nine hours total of testing time.
Due to the amount of time spent taking the exam and its mixture of multiple-choice and constructed response questions, students can encounter a wide variety of difficulties on test day, possibly struggling with the tests content and formatting, having to battle test exhaustion, or simply facing anxiety at the prospect of such an exam. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with personal TCAP tutoring throughout Colorado who can help your student face his or her exam with confidence. A superb personal instructor can help your student understand the material he or she finds most confusing and learn valuable test-taking strategies that can help him or her not only on the TCAP, but also when taking other standardized exams.
Private tutoring provides the opportunity to customize your child's TCAP lessons to fit his or her particular academic needs. Whether your student is a fourth grader struggling to tell facts apart from opinions or a ninth grader to whom exponents seem completely foreign, our educational directors can take your student's specific strengths, weaknesses, and concerns into account when helping you select the TCAP tutor best suited to helping him or her succeed.
This tutor can then analyze your students understanding of TCAP material and create a customized series of lesson plans focused on just those concepts and problem types with which he or she struggles most. TCAP tutoring sessions are further individualized in that they all take place in a one-on-one setting, where your student can have the full attention of his or her instructor and can work through the material at his or her own pace. Additionally, a private tutor can help your student identify the study method or methods that will benefit them the most when studying for the exam.
TCAP instructors can also help your student master test-taking strategies that he or she can rely on when faced with questions that appear unfamiliar. Studying these techniques can be just as important as reviewing academic subjects, as they can provide your student with the skills to approach a confusing question critically and choose a reasonable answer even without direct knowledge of the tested concept. A highly skilled and experienced tutor can also help your student develop time management skills. They can help your student understand how much time they should be spending on each kind of question so that they are not spending too much time on individual questions. This will help make sure that they are able to have the chance to answer every question on the test.
Your student is a unique learner, so why settle for a one-size-fits-all studying resource when you can provide him or her with efficient and effective instruction? Instead of relying on impersonal resources, contact the Varsity Tutors educational directors about the TCAP tutoring available near you, and let us help you find an exceptional instructor for your student today.
The Varsity Tutors live learning platform enables you and your student to meet with their private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives both of you the flexibility to pick a time and location that works best for you and your student.

Recent Cranston CSAP/ TCAP Tutoring Session Notes
During the session we reviewed another practice test and focused our attention on other elements of the writing section as well as strategy for the critical reasoning section (more specifically the vocabulary questions). We spent about half the time on the Math.
We worked on one section of grammar and 2 sections of Math today from Practice Exam 3. We also studied vocab questions from one Reading section and the student was able to answer a few more questions. He is also improving upon his technique for answering vocab questions by analyzing the sentences to see why type of word would fit (versus answering based on definitions).
The student was not very sure of herself, especially in the math section, so I spent most of the session building her confidence and reviewing key concepts from Algebra II and Geometry. She simply needed guidance setting up the problems. I then worked with Student #2 in the writing section. I discussed subject-verb agreement, parallelism, logical comparisons, possessive adjectives, etc. He was familiar with test strategy, so I had him take educated guesses and do his best to apply all the rules.
Today we went over the student's essay, which she had written in the last session. We then spent the rest of the session focusing on math. In particular, we worked on word problems, rate problems, and geometry problems. I taught her some strategies for dealing with word problems and rate problems in particular.
We continued with the English sections, solidifying a lot of the grammar points she either hadn't learned or had forgotten. I'm excited to see how she continues to improve.
Today we worked on more PSAT-type Critical Reading practice. We reviewed the passage from last week and worked on two more (rather lengthy) passages that I had assigned as homework. The student did quite well with the passages, and we had a few incorrect answers to work through. The student's conceptual understanding seems to be pretty good and he knows some of the Critical Reading passage 'tips' and 'tricks'. One of the issues that arose a few times yesterday was how to deal with passages whose questions end with "except"; those questions require a bit of "backwards" thinking, and that tripped the student up a few times, so we'll continue working on those. I left him with some SAT grammar practice, and soon we'll begin discussing (and writing about) 1984 to encourage both grammar and critical thinking practice. Great session!
