Session Summaries by Algebra Tutors

Algebra Tutoring review by Rolando in Denver, CO
Today I scribed for the student for an hour. In class they started reviewing for the final exam. The student had a hard time remembering what to do with the problems at first. Afterwards, I tutored her for another hour and we worked on the final exam review packet. It seems like I will sort of be "re-teaching" her all the material and hopefully she is able to hold on to the information for the final.

Algebra Tutoring review by Melissa in Denver, CO
The student and I had a great session tonight. He needs to be through with chapter 9 by the end of next week, so we worked on sections 1, 2, 3 (said he is to skip 4) and touched on sections 5 and 6 (essentially the whole chapter.). I was proud of how well he grasped the material, particularly his ability to apply concepts he had learned previously to this chapter. Good session!

Algebra Tutoring review by Chirag in Denver, CO
In this week's session we started from where we left last session; i.e. solving system of equations. We worked on more problems related to this topic and the student learned about a new method of solving equation i.e. substitution method. To make sure the student was getting comfortable with this topic we worked on his homework problems. As the student is uncomfortable with word problems, this particular homework was as a good practice for him. In this homework, the student had to understand the given word problems, translate them into mathematical equations and finally solve the system of equations. This helped him cover both grounds; comprehending word problems and solving equations. By end of the session he was clear about the topic and was comfortable with it. Practicing more problems with help him get better with word problems.

Algebra Tutoring review by David in Denver, CO
Today the student and I went over a few ways of solving systems of linear equations. We utilized the elimination, substitution, and graphing methods to do so. Additionally, we went over row reduction (Gauss-Jordan) methods of solving systems of linear equations using matrices. She exhibited great mental math and excellent fundamentals throughout the session. She has a test approaching this Wednesday with only a few more topics that we will cover Monday evening. I asked her to try some more examples of the Gauss-Jordan method for homework as practice.

Algebra Tutoring review by Sissi in Denver, CO
We first went over all the questions the student had on her practice test. She needed work on proportions and compound/simple interest, but most of the errors came from simple mistakes. I suggested that she could perhaps space out her numbers more when multiplying to avoid carrying a digit to the wrong place or losing a digit somewhere in the process. Then we continued to work on the sample test. Our next meeting is Tuesday and we should be able to conclude our pre-algebra review and move onto algebra I. She mentioned she might postpone her assessment test to give her more time to review. We will see how it goes.

Algebra Tutoring review by Zachary in Denver, CO
The student and I went over his homework and spent the rest of the time practicing finding the distance, midpoint and slope using two points. He was good about remembering the formulas, but had trouble discerning what to do when faced with adding negative numbers. We came up with a way for him to figure out what to do that made sense with him. He seemed to be proficient with it, but I will retest him in this area first thing next session. He was genuinely concerned with improving his performance which was extremely refreshing.
