Anatomy Tutor • +35 Subjects

I am currently in Pharmacy School at the University of Colorado - Denver. I'm in my third year and could not be more excited to start my career as a Pharmacist! Before attending Pharmacy School, I graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in Biochemistry. Obviously the sciences are where my tutoring strengths lie, especially in Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology. Don't be fooled, though! I'm also great with English, essay writing, and grammar. Plus, I'm a not-so-secret history buff, especially when it comes to European History. I've also got quite a bag of tricks when it comes to study tips, organization, and balancing studying with life.I got my start in tutoring during my undergraduate studies at DU. I was a camp counselor with a summer camp for high schoolers. The camp focused on Chemistry and Math. Afterwards, I taught PCAT review classes. My personal tutoring style involves pieces of the Socratic method; I use questions and the student's knowledge of the subject to walk through a subject piece by piece. I am patient and always willing to approach a problem from a new angle if the original approach isn't quite working. When I'm not in class, I spend a lot of time outdoors in this beautiful city I call home. I love to run and recently purchased a road bike. I think a triathlon might be in my near future! I also love to cook, adore coffee, and spend a lot of time reading. Thanks for reading, and I hope to meet you soon!

I'm a professional artist and published author who has spent a lifetime learning about the world around me and hope to pass what I've learned on to others.I especially enjoy history--especially 19th and 20th century European and American history--and know more about the great conflicts of the last two centuries than anyone should know. (I know that studying wars is a downer, but they are, whether we like it or not, the seminal events that have shaped the world we live in today and need to be understood for the impact they have on our lives.) I also know quite a bit about American politics (I can name all 44 presidents in order, the year they were president, their party, and the major events that occurred during their presidency, none of which has proven useful to me to date) as well as the major cultural and social events of the last 200 years. I'm less conversant on economic trends, but I'm always open to learning more.Of course, as a published author I am also interested in helping others learn how to write better. It saddens me that so few people, children and adults, know how to construct a coherent sentence. Knowing how to express yourself in written form is a vital tool for success, and does much to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to looking professional. I'm also a graphic designer with thirty years industry experience, so if you can't figure out how to use Photoshop or Illustrator, let me know.A few personal things about me. I'm a U.S. Navy veteran (1976-1984, back when there were only sailing ships and pirates to deal with), a husband and father of two grown boys (as well as the weary owner of three small dogs, who shall remain as nameless as they are clueless). My hobbies, besides the obvious art and writing, include, but are by no means limited to, reading, watching science and history documentaries (when I'm not watching American Pickers), karaoke (don't ask), playing the guitar, hiking, biking, and tennis. I'm also a coin collector (numismatist to be more precise), and a paranormal investigator. (Check out my website to see authentic ghost photos people have sent me over the years). Other interests include religion, spirituality and philosophy, though I'm far from an expert in any of them.My personal style of teaching is more conversational in nature. History comes alive through anecdotal stories, which I enjoy telling. Dates and places are important, of course, but without context history can be pretty dry stuff. My goal is to make it fun as well as educational which, I believe, improves the chances that the student will retain the information. You also like to show how events correlate to each other and that they are not just a series of random occurrences that have nothing to do with each other. That's the approach I believe works best, and why I believe I can make a difference, especially to a student who is struggling with history.Well, that's about it. If you think I'd be a good match for you, let me know and we'll get together. Thanks!

My name is Matt, and I'm excited to work with you on your learning goals, whether that means the LSAT and law school admissions, academic or professional writing, or the life sciences! My background is in science research. I earned my PhD in molecular biology in July 2018, working on protein biology and epigenetics. But after deciding that the wetlab wasn't my long-term home, I started prepping for the LSAT and preparing my law school admissions materials. I'm currently applying to law school to start in the Fall semester of 2020.When I began my LSAT prep, I was scoring in the mid-150s. For test preparation purposes, the LSAT is not a knowledge-based exam. It predominantly tests your reading speed, your reading accuracy, and your ability to reason quickly and cleanly. There is no real set of "facts" that you can memorize that will improve your exam performance. However, I saw in my own prep that there are certainly skills that you can develop, practice, and perfect that will dramatically change your LSAT outlook. After a few months of prep, I scored an official 173 on the July 2019 exam. I've since been interviewed for and offered admission to multiple T14 law schools.I should also note that I prepped for the LSAT as an adult learner. For most of my prep, I was studying the LSAT during nights and weekends around a full-time job. Perhaps luckily, the LSAT is a test that doesn't really benefit from cramming. A few hours a day, a few days a week, if used carefully and intentionally, can lead to an effective and meaningful LSAT prep plan. I'm very happy to work with other adult learners or those planning mid-career transitions, as I myself was, on your LSAT prep and law school admissions. The LSAT is likely the single most important element of your law school admissions package that you can easily improve. I also believe the LSAT is just a really interesting and well-designed test. As a tutor, I'm excited to work with you to dive deep into the LSAT, increase your scores, and improve your law school admissions prospects!I'm also very happy to work with students on their law school admissions materials and on writing in general. During undergraduate and my PhD, I gained much experience writing academically and professionally, from writing academic papers, to published scientific manuscripts, to large grant applications. Good writing is the foundation of so many disciplines. It would be a pleasure to help you develop strong writing fundamentals and a unique, personal, and professional writing style that will stretch into all of your career endeavors. Finally, my academic background is in (molecular) biology. I've worked with all types of students in that capacity, from directly mentoring months-long laboratory internship projects, to lecturing classroom sessions, to advising students during computer and laboratory practicals. If you'd like additional tutoring support as you work on your biology degree, or wherever you are in your life sciences training, I'd be happy to work with you! Thanks very much for reading! If you think we might be a good match for your learning goals, please feel free to get in touch. I'd love to hear from you. And in any case, best of luck, whatever your educational plans and goals are in the future!

Algebra Tutor • +13 Subjects

Upon entering college, I tested into a basic math but was eventually able to obtain a graduate degree in a math intensive subject. The road from basic algebra to advanced mathematics was arduous but it was all made possible over a decade ago with the help of a tutor. It was through tutoring that I discovered my greatest barrier to learning mathematics: a lack of belief in myself. The myth that I did not possess a deep inborn talent required to perform math or science kept me from reaching my potential. Once I let that go, I discovered that even a belated and neglected learner, like I once was, could succeed in math. Math is a craft learned through doggedness and attention. Belief in ones own abilities can only be recognized through exposure and experience. This is what a tutor provides.I developed a large repertoire of math skills and memory tricks while being tutored and eventually decided to pass them along as a tutor myself. I continued to use practical equations, colorful anecdotes, and methods of engaging exploration to assist students as a peer tutor until I completed my masters degree in 2006. I was then promoted to the full time Coordinator of Math and Science tutoring at my previous University, where I excelled in my duties to create and present science and math workshops, and to hire and train a team of successful math and science tutors.I believe in successful tutoring because I am a success story.

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Literature/Creative Writing at the University of Denver. Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I was a creative writing/English lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis where I completed my MFA and senior post-graduate teaching fellowship. I received my BA in Philosophy from Carleton College in 2009. Before my time in St. Louis and Denver, I taught English Literature at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut and, earlier, at Germantown High School in Philadelphia. During my time at Loomis and Germantown, I taught English Lit I/III, Contemporary Literature, 10th grade grammar and expository writing seminars, Literature of the Sea, Experimental Novel, and Creative Writing. At Wash U, I taught Fiction Writing I, II, and Microfiction, and last year I facilitated pedagogy training for Wash U MFA graduate students. I currently tutor at DU's Writing Center and, beginning this fall, I will teach undergraduate fiction classes. I have a marked interest in modern and contemporary fiction, though I very much look forward to helping students with all craft/literature/essay writing/verbal test taking endeavors.

I have been a Colorado licensed elementary teacher for eleven years. Teaching all subjects makes me uniquely qualified to work with children in all subject areas. I have mainly taught intermediate elementary students. I am also skilled in helping students develop organizational and study skills that help to prepare them for middle school. My original Bachelor's degree is in Political Science. Next, I obtained my teaching license and a few years later I earned my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught English Language Learners, educationally challenged students, and gifted students. I have been recognized by Denver Public Schools for the high growth of my students. I believe that all children can learn if the teacher uses whatever is necessary to get the information to the child in a way that they can understand it.I am originally from the Midwest but have lived in Colorado for many years now. I love the mountains and hike often. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, reading, and traveling. I'm sure that I can help your child reach their academic potential.

I am a Biochemistry graduate who excelled in the courses I tutor as an undergraduate student. Since my undergraduate studies I have strengthened not only my understanding of these subjects but also my love for them. All knowledge is beautiful but I am a true lover of science. To be able to accurately and precisely explain the world around us is a wonderful ability. I would like to help you attain not just an A in your course but also to share with you this wonder. As far as my tutoring background, I have tutored these subjects privately for close to seven years and at two Universities including one of our local Denver Universities. I am friendly, effective, and professional.Aside from all this lovely science, I am a lively conversationalist on running (particularly barefoot), hiking (particularly long distance, e.g., the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails), cycling, cooking, and, of course, chess. Finally, I also speak fluent Spanish.Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
