Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Jaclyn in Denver, CO
We spent most of our time working through Reading, as this was what he had the least amount of time to practice with. He improved quite a bit, to 7 or 8 questions right per passage, and though he'll likely be rushed for time, his score should go up a few points. Overall, he's worked really hard the last week and I expect to see something much greater than a 16, and closer to the mid-twenties.

The student and I worked through all of the pre-algebra topics for the exam. We began working through the algebra topics and will continue with this during our next session. She has retained much of what we discussed in the past, although we did have to do a brief review of some of the more complicated exponent rules.

Today I worked with the student on fraction and decimal conversion. I had noticed in our last session that he was having trouble working and converting some common fractions without the aid of a calculator and I wanted to work with him on going between the two mentally and with long division if necessary. We finished up with exam mathematics problems out of his prep book.

The student and I reviewed the math we did last time and prepared for the grade 7 NY state English exam. The student seems to have really grasped the algebra concepts we worked on during our last session; he did very well on his quiz. We went over several problems that he still found a bit tricky. We then worked on reading comp -- multiple choice and self-directed response.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Adam in Denver, CO
In our session today from 7pm to 9pm, we reviewed the fundamentals from last week of making sure to use the process of elimination to maximize points on the SAT. We addressed also the math section of her prior SAT to review how the SAT orders the questions and how that relates to efficient time management--saving up time early on in the easier questions to use later on in the harder questions. We covered the concepts of extracting data from graphs and charts, using an example of a question she got wrong on the prior SAT. We also covered a difficult geometry problem by helping her visualize it to turn it into more of a reading comprehension problem, which is a stronger suit of the student's. Toward the end, I went over the highlights of the ACT she is taking in 2 days, but the focus on this session and the last one (and future ones) is the SAT, which she is taking in 3 weeks. Next appointment is tentatively 4/18 at 7pm. Good progress.
