How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

As students move from high school to college, taking the SAT is one of the biggest but most necessary steps. Colleges use SAT scores in their admissions process, and use them to help determine important things such as who should be admitted to their school and who should be awarded merit scholarships. Of course, as with any standardized test, preparing for the SAT may be challenging. If you'd like some extra help in your preparation process, you might want to consider working with a tutor. If that sounds interesting, you may connect with SAT tutoring in Denver, CO, by calling Varsity Tutors today.

When you work with a private tutor, you gain important benefits that just aren't possible when you study on your own. One of the biggest of these is the one-on-one attention that you get from your tutor, who may be an expert on the SAT. That means you'll be able to find an easy answer to all of your questions as soon as they come up, instead of having to search around for them on the Internet or in a book. Also, each study session your tutor develops for you may be targeted towards your needs. Whatever your biggest areas of concern are, your tutor may try to help you solve them through these specialized lessons. Not only that, but a skilled SAT tutor in Denver might increase your motivation to succeed by sharing their passion for the test with you in your lessons.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Shannon in Denver, CO
This was our first session. We mainly discussed that he wanted to focus on math, and I had him do some practice problems to see where he is at. He has already taken a PSAT so he is familiar with format, timing, etc. I think with a little prep his score will improve greatly.

SAT Tutoring review by Julie in Denver, CO
The student and I worked on reading comp and vocab today. Her timing is a little off on the reading comp, and we are trying to get it back on track before the exam. Her vocabulary is improving -- she has taken my advice and now studies for a little while each day. Overall, the student continues to make improvements.

SAT Tutoring review by Kim-Yen in Denver, CO
We worked on the writing section today. We began a list of common errors that occur on the test and worked on being able to identify both the type of error and possible solutions. Being able to name the reason an answer choice was incorrect was very helpful for the student to identify similar errors that came up in future questions. We also employed this strategy for the other portions of the writing multiple choice section with similarly positive results. The student hasn't done a timed practice trial yet, but in the event that she is crunched for time on this section, we talked about a potential time-saving strategy: for the "improving paragraphs" part of the writing section, not all of the questions require context, so skipping to the questions and only reading the relevant parts of the paragraph can save some time.

SAT Tutoring review by Jason in Denver, CO
The student is doing great work on the notecards! He's made more than he's learned, but its evident that he's serious about his SAT prep. We talked about the phraseology of the writing questions, and he understands now how to write "with the grain" of the questions (i.e. that it is easier to argue against absolutes and for exceptions than the inverse). We also spent some time looking over probability math. I've asked him to complete another practice test for the next meeting.

SAT Tutoring review by Anni in Denver, CO
We continued working on all 3 sections and reviewed problems that she got wrong or did not understand from the practice passages she did. We continued adding notes to her SAT notebook and continued going over new vocabulary words. We practiced using techniques that she learned with approaching vocab questions. We also went over essay writing and essay structure. I believe that the student has gotten the body portion down in terms of support, but needs work on the introduction and conclusion. I advised her to try not to repeat the prompt that is given but try to write it in her own words. I went over writing the introduction together with the student and showed her how to write a good introduction and conclusion. We also created a plan/timeline since test day is approaching. When test day approaches, I like to push the client to work harder as the end is almost here. I suggested that the student attempt to do 2 full practice exams a week and work on SAT passages for 2-3 hours daily.

SAT Tutoring review by Andrew in Denver, CO
The student is pretty busy these couple of weeks preparing for the cumulative final in his AP chemistry class and then the actual AP test. So he didn't have time to complete the practice worksheets I left last week on comma rules. So I reviewed them again this week to make sure he has a chance to reinforce the tutoring with practice. I then moved on to go through semicolon and colon rules used on the test. We also worked on his writing, introducing more descriptive language to help draw the reader into his argument and give him a chance to exercise some of his new vocabulary.
