San Clemente 6th Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
The ability to write clearly and concisely is a skill that individuals develop over the course of multiple years of schooling. Middle school is an important stage in the process of learning to write, as students' compositions are held to higher, more specific standards in all subjects, but especially language arts, science, and social studies. If your sixth grade student struggles with this aspect of his or her education, consider enlisting the assistance of a professional writing tutor.
Whether you are looking for someone who helps your child improve their writing ability, or you are trying to nurture your student's talent in creative writing, Varsity Tutors is excited to help you find a private tutor in your area. By evaluating your child's educational goals, strengths, and weaknesses, we can help you find a tutor who is best suited for their learning style. No matter where in the United States you live, there is a private writing tutor who is excited to help your student grow and succeed.
One of the greatest benefits of working with a private writing tutor is that your child can study under a personalized lesson plan. By doing this, they are able to get the support and assistance they need to overcome specific academic obstacles. Your child might struggle with a specific component of writing, like organizing supporting details or incorporating various stylistic elements. In the classroom setting, your student's teacher may not have the time or resources to ensure that they overcome this hurdle. In a private setting, however, your tutor is committed to helping your child overcome all academic obstacles so that they become a better writer as a whole.
Tutoring in sixth grade writing takes into account your child's goals, learning style, personality, strengths, and weaknesses in order to better address such issues. Tutors can clarify assignments and prompts, develop essay models, edit your student's work, identify supplemental resources, and re-teach material that initially eluded his or her understanding. Even the most accomplished authors hone their craft by emulating and studying the work of others. A writing tutor is a natural and highly effective means of guiding your child's academic development.
It doesn't matter if your student must master the argumentative, informational, or narrative essay, Varsity Tutors can help you to connect with a tutor who will schedule one-on-one sessions that fit into the busy lifestyle of your student and your family. Furthermore, if you are unable to meet your tutor in person, you can request to study over the internet in face-to-face online lessons using the Varsity Tutors live platform. Because of this, private lessons are one of the most efficient and effective ways for busy families supplement classroom-based learning. We understand that athletic commitments and extracurricular activities can play an important role in schooling. Tutors can meet whenever you choose, wherever your student is most comfortable: in your home or at a convenient location such as a cafe or a library. Writing tutoring can be adjusted to occur as frequently or infrequently as your student's academic schedule demands.
Group prep classes cannot allow the same flexibility, nor can they adapt according to your student's changing needs. If identifying textual support is a serious problem for your student, your tutor can spend as many sessions as necessary to bring him or her up to speed. Is your child learning research skills, or do they need help with transitions? If so, a writing tutor can help them learn these important skills and become better writers.
If you are serious about helping your child become a better writer, call Varsity Tutors today and ask for help finding a qualified tutor in your area. Not only will you be helping them get better marks in school, but you will also assist them in building important professional skills to carry with them throughout life.

Recent San Clemente 6th Grade Writing Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I learned about how to find the main idea of a paragraph and how to structure a paragraph. We also worked more on verb tenses and comma usage. I had the student do some more free writing to pinpoint his weaknesses. He continues to struggle with subject-verb agreement and punctuation, but these are skills he will likely build as he writes more. I think it would be a good idea for the student to more consistently read and write about what he is reading to boost vocabulary and his understanding of the conventions of writing. He is a focused and motivated student, the key for him is practice.
The student is working on a research pape. We discussed the paper in general and formulated the third section of his paper which will be about statistics.
In this session, student 1 and I worked on editing her creative writing piece while student 2 was asked to do the assignment again using an invented character and invented happenings. By the time I finished editing with student 1, student 2 had finished her new piece exceptionally well. Student 1's self-editing was smart and her adaptations, based on teacher-suggested edits, were done with enthusiasm and a smile on noting the improvement in her writing.
Student 2's new piece was playful, smart and worked beautifully from beginning to end with only minor edits and the addition of a 4th paragraph for emphasis near the end. Congrats to both for working so hard and so happily, not just for me, but for themselves.
The student and I began our session by discussing The Little Prince, then quickly moved on to math problems. We practiced factoring and simplifying fractions. After working on math, we began to work on writing. I asked him if he would prefer to write a short story or an essay, and he wanted to write a story. We discussed the basic elements of stories and brainstormed topics for the story. He developed a basic plot concept, and I left him with the task of creating characters before our next session. I also told him to find and note two interesting or important passages when reading the next book from his summer reading list.
The student and I worked on a writing assignment that is due as summer work. It requires her to write historical entries about the Revolutionary War as a fictional character. She had difficulty with this so we identified key events of the Revolutionary War and worked from there. She is required to write 7 entries with two paragraphs, one entry providing historical evidence of an event and the other paragraph explaining the characters response to that event during the time period. We finished two entries, and I let her with specific events to write about for the remaining 5 entries.
I covered finishing the writing assignment - the remaining two points, supporting examples, quotes, and conclusion.
No scores/grades.
I didn't leave her with any extra practice.
No concerns, just very happy she completed her summer assignments with a week to spare before school starts up. Pretty awesome!
