Tutoring review by Steve in Ellicott City, MD
Discussed and worked on a web assignment for Chapter 5.1, which dealt with: - the central limit theorem; - probabilities of normal distributions v. sampling distributions using the CLT; - central tendency and the law of large numbers; - Z score calculations, their corresponding probabilities, and double-checking the work using the graphing calculator. The session went great.  The student picked up the material very easily today and forged ahead without a lot of guidance from me.  It was terrific seeing her pick up those topics so quickly and apply them without issue.  She did a fantastic job today.

Tutoring review by John in Ellicott City, MD
The student and I reviewed quickly her notes from her latest class and immediately started her homework.  Topics included:  direct and indirect variation, slope and related formulas (slope-intercept and point-slope forms), and creating single-variable linear equations from word problems.  She seemed to grasp this material quickly during the session and the majority of her homework was completed by the end of the session.  Her overall understanding of the material seems to be increasing as well.  In the last half hour of the session, I reviewed some chemistry concepts with her regarding a recent lab report.  We discussed strategies and techniques to improve her lab reports in the future.  We also worked on dimensional analysis problems using the metric system.  At the end of the session, it was decided that I will be tutoring her two times per week (Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 PM) in both algebra and chemistry.

Tutoring review by Ishita in Ellicott City, MD
Today was focused on getting to know how comfortable the student was with the test. He struggled a bit with synonyms and reading comprehension but was able to breeze through the math diagnostic section pretty easily. I'm going to bring in a little bit more difficult math for him to work on tomorrow.

Tutoring review by Brittany in Ellicott City, MD
The student got a new writing assignment from her teacher, which we spent a lot of time analyzing.  We focused mainly on picking one side of the argument, but making a thesis statement that acknowledges the opposing side.  We also spent time discussing what material to cover in her body paragraphs, specifically keeping the body paragraphs in line with the thesis of the paper.  Right now, she's focusing her ideas into a coherent argument, before she can begin to work on her style and diction.  I also brought her another prompt just so she can begin to get used to reading and analyzing a prompt and deciding where and how to start writing a paper.  We talked through how she might begin to tackle this prompt.  I will continue to bring various prompts so she can become used to this initial process of analyzation and prewriting, before moving on to the actual writing process.

Tutoring review by Annie in Ellicott City, MD
Today was our last session! The student had a couple of scenarios to review. These were a wedding, a man losing his wallet, and giving directions. For these scenarios we wrote out scripts and then translated them into Spanish. He has a much better grasp on conjugating and I was impressed with all the work he has put into the preterite and imperfect. I think he is well prepared and will do a great job!
