Summer Tutoring review by Colleen in Mount Prospect, IL
The student worked on his unit project today: Compare and contrast the textile industry in Japan with the textile industry in India from ~1830 to 1914, using the provided ten documents. This involved a whole lot of study skills and critical thinking skills. The skills required included reading a table, comparing data in one table to data in another table, using math to interpret the figures, finding similarities and differences in data, drawing conclusions from the tables, using historical information to support your conclusions, and making inferences. All this and writing an essay too! He has all of the class today to continue working on this project, and I set him up mentally and on paper with what he should be doing. His assigned task was to use the class time wisely and come up with a completed rough draft.

Summer Tutoring review by Sara in Mount Prospect, IL
Today, I tried to introduce a couple new study skills into the student's repertoire. The first was using flashcards. She said she has used them before, but only a little bit. I taught her how she can use flashcards for all of her school subjects, and we started making some cards for her upcoming English test. The other study skill we went over was how to parse out information from a text and make it into a diagram. We did this with her science lessons, where she was learning both the nitrogen and carbon cycles. I know that the student understands the material that we cover and the study skills we use together.

Summer Tutoring review by Jeana in Mount Prospect, IL
Today the student brought in trig, physics, and APUSH homework. We worked through problems together, both of us pretty used to the routine of getting to the end of a problem and seeing if we both came out with the same answers, and discussing how we got our answers if they disagree. The trig assignment was easy for the student, so we quickly moved onto physics, which took a little longer because of the new, foreign concept and different wordings of problems regarding Coulomb's Law. The student was still able to solve all of the problems on his own and completed his physics homework.

Today the student wanted to start the session with reading and she chose to read Invisible Stanley. As she was reading she did a good job with reading for meaning and checking for comprehension by rereading sentences or words that didn't make sense to her the first time. I would also stop her periodically to ask her comprehension questions as well. The second part of the session she continued to work from a subtraction booklet that assesses different types of skills. The most difficult problems for her were problems where either the subtrahend or the minuend were missing. I helped her come up with strategies to solve those types of problems and then she was able to successfully complete each problem.

Summer Tutoring review by Toniann in Mount Prospect, IL
The student and I focused on reading and writing today. Regarding stories, we defined character, setting, and the main idea. We read one chapter of a chapter book and reviewed the characters in the book, the book's setting, and the main idea of the chapter. As we read we stopped to discuss the story and to write down and define, using the dictionary, words he did not know. He is improving! His fluency and comprehension have increased. He still needs to work on his understanding of main idea. I continue to suggest 20 minutes of reading with his mom and/or dad every day, as well as a brief discussion of what they read together. Questions like: What just happened? Why did it happen? How is a character feeling? Why did a character just do that? are great.
