German Tutoring review by Connie in Lisle, IL
Student 1: I worked with the student on verb conjugations for present tense regular verbs. We reviewed how the main verb in a clause must be conjugated, i.e., it must have the correct ending to correspond with its subject. German verbs normally end in "en"ù (sometimes "n"ù), but to add the proper ending, you must first remove the en/n to obtain the stem of the verb. The endings are then added to the stem. We also reviewed question words together (Wer/wo/warum/wie/wann, etc.?). I taught him how to express speaking in different languages (auf Deutsch, auf Englisch, auf Chinesisch, etc.) and some country names/nationalities (the UK ones). I assigned him a conjugation exercise as homework. Student 2: We discussed her AP exam that she took earlier that day, and learned some vocabulary regarding testing and difficult expressions. I then reviewed the conjugation forms for regular present tense verbs with her. We ended the class by creating sentences with verbs that are generally associated with the accusative case. I asked her to complete the remaining ones as homework.

German Tutoring review by Mike in Lisle, IL
We covered the perfect past tense form in some length, as well as some more minor things like different ways to say you like something. We went through the student's course and tried out some new vocab as well as sentence construction and reading. Everything went pretty well; when he was stuck on a word I encouraged him to look it up himself rather than me give it to him every time, and I think this helps him. We also discussed some other ways we can change up our sessions. We both decided to order the first Harry Potter book in German and to read that. Reading this will really push him, and for someone who has not learned any German prior he is picking it up quickly. He is starting to use the flashcard website that will allow him to review vocabulary, which will really help him. His exercises go much quicker now as well. I think he is really beginning to understand the core concepts and rules. I asked him to read the first 10 pages of Harry Potter and keep up with his course everyday as well. Listening to and speaking German need the most work for him, and so in addition to reading I am going to send him some German shows, and do some work with the Harry Potter audio book. Listening is often much more difficult and this is something I want to prepare him for. We can't converse so that makes it difficult but we can do simple things like talk about the day. The audio books should help quite a bit with that as well. Overall very good today!

German Tutoring review by Peter in Lisle, IL
- The students spoke the German alphabet out loud, together and individually. Both students did a great job. - We also conjugated "to be" (sein) and "to have" (haben) in present tense (out loud).
