Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Erin in Lisle, IL
My final session with the student was to review grammar and literature concepts that will be on his English 3 Honors final exam this week. We reviewed some of the key grammar concepts he needed some assistance on--subject verb agreement with singular and plural subjects and pronoun antecedent agreement. He took several online practice quizzes to assess his readiness, and we talked through explanations to any problems he missed. We also spent a great deal of time breaking down the main philosophies of transcendentalism and existentialism and the similarities and differences between the main tenets of Emerson and Thoreau. We concluded the session with practice multiple choice quizzes on themes, symbols, and main events in all four novels to be covered on the final. He mentioned he feels much better about the material going into his final and showed great improvement on his practice quizzes and ability to explain difficult grammar concepts and connections with themes across novels and historical time periods covered in class.

English Tutoring review by Lindsey in Lisle, IL
This session we completed the Philanthropy Phair project in MovieMaker. The student needed the most help with expression and word choice. I reminded her often to consider her audience viewing her presentation when she chose what she wanted to say during the narration of her video. She did very well in her selection of music and creative elements of the presentation. Her attitude was exceptional. I think she really enjoyed working on this project. I believe she also learned how to use MovieMaker as a presentation tool. This was a great session. Putting together her English projects was so much fun and the time really flew by. Overall, I think she was happy to see her project captured and presentable in the way she imagined.

English Tutoring review by Mark in Lisle, IL
We started today's tutoring lesson with a review of some of the parts of speech: adjective, pronoun, conjunction, colon, semicolon, and commas. The student is nearing mastery level in this material (parts of speech). After our review of parts of speech, we moved on to vocabulary development. Today, I gave him a vocabulary review quiz on Chapter 12 (to check for information retention). We then moved on to study the ten new vocabulary words in Chapter 13. After we concluded our review of the new vocabulary words in Chapter 13, I gave him a twenty-question quiz (to check for understanding). Out of the twenty questions, he correctly answered all twenty questions (100% -- Bravo!). We concluded our session with a brief, creative writing assignment. On a picture of a large, blank tombstone, I had him write his epitaph -- an inscription in memory of a dead person. The epitaph was written in poetic, rhyming form (AABBA) --meaning that all the A lines rhyme and all the B lines rhyme.

We covered the use of some verbs that are always followed by infinitives. We also discussed crafting a letter of appreciation to a senior leader at Shell. We will continue to study verbs that are followed by infinitives and/or gerunds.
