Reading Tutoring review by Dorothy in Libertyville, IL
1) The student sought his homework packet for the coming week, and we began with dictation of his new spelling words, to determine which were already known and which required most intensive practice. He could spell 2 words immediately (are and live), sounded out 4 with a couple efforts for each (cast, cost, damp, and stamp), and had greater difficulty with 4 others (away, does, where, and there). Initial errors before the coming week's practice with these words included missed representation of a medial/ internal sound, incorrect phonetic spelling (substituting a homophone for the needed word), and need to memorize a non-phonetic spelling (supplied dues for does). 2) We continued with sight words, filling in some simple ones, and focusing on silent/ magic E from last week. 3) We used the Chunks game to practice long A with silent E and the _ay phonetic word family. (The student had pointed out that long A can be spelled with _ay.) 4) Ryan requested that I bring an item for show-and-tell next time.

Reading Tutoring review by Renee in Libertyville, IL
With Student 1, we reviewed a couple of assignments that he had; topic was inferences. Sentences for vocabulary was another task that he completed. With Student 2, we read and discussed Book One of the Odyssey by Homer; the second part of the session was geared toward writing. I reviewed with him a PowerPoint presentation that I had about the "attention grabber" and how to write one or use one. The task was to choose three quotations; one from the Odyssey; one from a book of his choice, and one quote about a scientific discovery. He then was given the task to write introductory paragraphs using these attention grabbers as the introduction for these paragraphs.

Reading Tutoring review by Janay in Libertyville, IL
The student and I played the CVC roll game. While reading a lot of the words, he mixed up the b's and d's. Afterwards, I wrote a series of b's and d's, and asked him to circle the b's. He was able to do this. He was also able to read the following words correctly: bam, dan, bot, bum, dat, dot, bug, dug, bay, and day. He did okay on the fluency passages, small growth. We spent a lot of time reviewing the most recent list of high frequency words. He got 25/30 words correct!
