Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Jeremy in Libertyville, IL
The student told me that his class was covering weather at the time. However, he was already fairly knowledgeable about weather-related terms from a previous Chinese teacher he had had, so I decided just to quiz him on weather as a warmup. We then talked about hobbies, focusing on basketball and other sports, since he is very interested in them. I taught him how to say some full sentences and we had a little conversation. Intermittently, I would go back to weather to take a break and not overload him with new information too quickly, as well as make sure he was prepared for class. Toward the end of the lesson, had him listen to a dialogue which contained many of the sentences on hobbies we had been practicing. I played it for him three times, so that he had the opportunity to absorb it and double check his comprehension. After that, I played the dialogue, and after each line, I paused the recording to have him translate the line into English. At that point, I would also ask him questions that would prompt him to answer with his own original sentences that had a similar structure as the line we had just listened to on the recording. I emailed him the recording so that he could listen to it throughout the week, in order to review the vocabulary within it.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Edwin in Libertyville, IL
Today, we reviewed first the sentence structure for chapter 7 - which involved using particles and how they affect a sentence. We reviewed saying sentences with both "ba" (suggestive particle) and "le" (completion particle). Next, we reviewed chapter 8 - the chapter with the main theme of food. We reviewed the 3 main sentence structures - "To eat", "Time of Day...", along with "... and...". The group was very good with remembering the vocabulary, but pronunciation was a bit more difficult for them. However, we were able to get through most of it. Next, we practiced how to say the day of the week, the year, the month, and day. They were able to remember most of it for the most part. I explained that to remember it, Chinese language uses measure words ALWAYS for numbers, so we always say the number first and then the measure word. For example, 2 cups of... , 3 batches of.... 3 hours and 15 minutes, etc.
