Today, the main focus was on an essay the student was writing, about Benjamin Franklin. He had already outlined it and written the first two paragraphs. I had him draft the remaining two paragraphs, including a conclusion, and then edited it. His punctuation is improving. I gave him some advice on avoiding repetitious language and on strengthening his conclusion. For the last half-hour, as he said he had no other homework, I drilled him on comma usage, following up on one of our prior sessions. He did reasonably well. He was able to find missing commas and delete extraneous ones.

The student's class is participating in the Slice of Life challenge for the month of March. Her teacher asked me to focus on writing dialogue with her. So first, we reviewed how dialogue was used in her personal reading book, "Henry Huggins." Next, I introduced examples of how to punctuate dialogue correctly using a comma, exclamation mark, and question mark. Then, she typed her Slice of Life, and we reviewed for spelling or punctuation errors. Lastly, she published her piece on her classroom blog.
