ISEE Tutoring review by David in Niles, IL
She had done a speed word problem that I left her to do yesterday. She got it right, so when we examined the units she could see that side of it. Then we took a practice math section. She guessed on a few and got 2/3rds correct. We spent a lot of time on Surface area, the principle idea of area being my focus. I think she liked that explanation.

ISEE Tutoring review by Sherna in Niles, IL
We worked on the verbal section. He took the diagnostic and scored 100%, up from the 60 percentile. We worked on the reading section and he has brought his reading from the 60 percentile to the 80 percentile. He is beginning to feel more confident about trusting his choices. He is also becoming better at reasoning through the answers to pick out the best choice. We are going to start timing the reading and verbal tests next week.

ISEE Tutoring review by Arielle in Niles, IL
Today we focused on the essay portion of the test. Before I had the student tackle the pre-write, she had a couple of questions about the essay: Do they always ask open-ended, experiential-type questions, or do they sometimes ask about a particular period in history, book, notable individual, etc.? I clarified that the question will always be directed at 'you' (at her) and will call for her to express an opinion or view or make a decision and explain the choice. For the pre-write this time around, I took time beforehand to set expectations in terms of how she might set up her mind map or organizational diagram, the sort of details that should be included, and the questions she should ask of herself. This seemed to do the trick, as I truly let her come up with and execute her own pre-write strategy. She did a great job of placing the response to the question/prompt at hand in the center of the 'Notes' section (equivalent to scratch paper) and building out who/what/where/when details from there. To ensure she was fully ready for the essay ahead, I asked several why questions to help grow some of the details she had documented. I emphasized "painting the picture" for her reader. Her essay itself was quite impressive: six clear paragraphs, humorous anecdotes, solid spelling and punctuation. The one item she missed that I encouraged her to squeeze in every time was a final edit (reading through the whole essay, beginning to end, before calling it a day).
