Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Dorothy in Niles, IL
Today we did an extended session so that we could get through the two assignments the student had due tomorrow. Both were on quadratic equations. First we solved them by factoring, then we needed to solve them using the quadratic formula. I went through the lessons with her, then we did the homework problems together. By the end, I declared her master of the quadratic formula. I am happy to report that the students grade has gone up to a 77.02. She is starting to think that a B might be possible, which excites her. Tomorrow we will work more on make up work and the study guide for her final.

Math Tutoring review by Kalman in Niles, IL
Our focus today is on reviewing the materials his teacher gave him in preparation for the standardized exam. The test seems to roughly cover the materials he and I have been working on, and so I offered some guidance to the student any time he seemed to get stuck on a given question. However, the student did well with the exam and the exam format. One problem we encountered was understanding what a given question was actually asking him to accomplish. For example, several 'systems of equations' questions asked about intersections. At first, he was unsure about how this applied, but I helped him draw out the concept and see the relationship between solving a system of equations and finding the intersection of two functions. He still assures me that he has no final exam other than the test. His strong performance on the practice tests we went through encourages me to believe that this will have a positive impact on his grade.

Math Tutoring review by Cole in Niles, IL
The student and I finished working on his final review packet today. It consisted mainly of logarithms and quadratic equations. He should be well prepared for his final, all he really needs to do is make sure that he has all the formulas memorized that are required.

Math Tutoring review by Sara in Niles, IL
The student has her final in a little less than two weeks. We went over part of a review packet, which included real numbers, absolute values, solving systems of equations, mixture problems, and graphing inequalities. The class is now done with logarithms and is beginning with conics. I explained to the student about the formula and corresponding graphs of parabolas. I also defined the focus, vertex, and directrix for her as well as key values, h, k and p. I told her how to graph parabolas from the standard form of equations, and how to identify the equations of parabolas from graphs. She learned this quickly after a lengthy step-by-step review, and she was very patient and ready to learn. We also reviewed the standard equation for a circle. We also reviewed examples of equations for circles and parabolas which do not seem to fit the standard form, and she understands that completing the square and rearranging the equation to a more transparent form is necessary.

Math Tutoring review by Ashlee in Niles, IL
In today's session I had the student take a Quiz reviewing some Chapter 1 Algebra rules. He did very well on this quiz and we went over the couple of problems that he got wrong. We also went through sections 2.1 and 2.2 and went through this homework that I assigned him on Monday. He did very well on his homework and only missed a couple of problems. I mapped out all of the lessons that we will be learning this month and told the student that we have to stick to this timeline in order to finish on schedule. Overall this was a really great session with the student.

Math Tutoring review by Elana in Niles, IL
We reviewed 6 of the 7 sections in Chapter 11 involved with factoring quadratic equations. The student is able to solve the more straightforward problems, but has some difficulty when the problems are more complex or presented in a different format. I encouraged him to continue practicing factoring problems where the coefficient of the 1st term and constant terms have multiple factors. Mastering this technique is a matter of repetition. As he does more problems he'll be able to quickly recognize the type of problem presented and should be able to anticipate the answer.
