We worked on another section of the Dracula paper, keeping in mind the following: word choice, keeping sentences simple and making sure every paragraph directly supports the thesis. We're making good progress!

Today I corrected the student's assignment from last Thursday where he was to write a lengthy paragraph on the subject of setting. I found his writing to be quite good in the fact that he included many descriptive adjectives and adverbs in relating his tale about a haunted house. After this phase of the session, I worked with him on 6 pages of grammar dealing with subject and predicate identification in sentence structure. I left him with another writing assignment where he will be creating a story with dialogue.

This week, we reviewed the student's Shakespeare writing assignment, which requires her to write a sonnet in the style of Shakespeare. We discussed how to approach creative writing like this, touching on topics of verse and meter, in terms of technical aspects. We also discussed using figurative language (which is part of her assignment) and how to craft a central metaphor or theme for the poem which relates to the topic and to choose figurative language based on that. We also discussed how to approach the larger structure of the poem, regarding the 'turn' or moment of contradiction which separates the two sections as well as the final couplet which summarizes the poem's contradictory aspects.

We went over his math homework as well as his vocabulary words. He is improving his reading skills and comprehension. He is very motivated to learn and has a positive attitude. Every session he struggles less to read and is pronouncing the words on his own better. I am very proud of him!

Phonics Tutoring review by Michael in Niles, IL
We went over reading extensively today together. The reading we accomplished was accompanied by extensive handwriting support and practice. We chose a level 3 reading book, and he read it aloud to me. Following that, each question was written down until perfect with capital letters/lower-case letters, spelling and punctuation were perfect. Then, the question and answer were copied again over into his school notebook. I was extremely picky about neatness, spelling, and grammar as well as the handwriting quality. This resulted in many re-writes, but it was important for his practice. I was very impressed with his ability to concentrate at his age for 2 hours straight in the library with only a few 2-5 minute breaks in between. He was great to work with and wonderful to teach.
