English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Marcy in Lansing, IL
The student and I continued working on informational reading. We read a story about Johnny Appleseed. Before reading, I let her choose which vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency activities she would be completing. We also used her prior knowledge to ignite her interest and predict outcomes. After reading, we completed the activities. She did an excellent job, especially with the comprehension activities.

The student and I continued working on reading comprehension and test taking skills. We worked with a few different pieces. The first was a science fiction piece, the second a nonfiction piece about a ballpark, and the third was a poem. We worked on different comprehension skills for each piece. He is really excelling with the reading comprehension, even though it is a grade above his level.

The student and I continued working on spelling and sounding out words. We spent extra time on G, J, C, and K - letters that she had trouble with. She seemed to open up a lot more this session, and was more excited and goofy than before. She always enjoys getting to see how many words she has written at the end of the session!

The student and I continued working through his essay and discussed our plans for reading "Light Between Oceans." On his essay, we focused on the presentation of his thesis and making sure that all the topic sentences were strong claims for that thesis. Next session, we will spend most of our time reviewing and analyzing part one of our new book.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Rachel in Lansing, IL
The student and I covered a previous essay he wrote about the state. We worked on refining one paragraph that he particularly liked, and we focused on correct comma placement and reading the sentences appropriately (i.e., pausing when we see a comma instead of racing through the sentence). We chose three words to define and related them to a different concept. He chose Legos, as he is very fond of Lance, a Lego hero. He has a great attitude, and he is open and attentive. We used the strategy of relation. I wanted him to pick something he was interested in and relate the material we were covering to it. He excelled and was able to grasp and absorb what we covered.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Patricia in Lansing, IL
The student and I covered addition and reviewed adding numbers with a carry-over value, such as adding 68 and 24. He completed about 10 of these more difficult equations. We used pennies to represent the numbers, and once the concept of the carry-over 10 was mastered, we moved on to the math worksheet. We also covered subtraction, and the student was assigned homework on both addition and subtraction.
