Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Mark in Lansing, IL
The student and I began today's tutoring session with a review of some algebra (in class they are working on combining like terms). Specifically, the student completed 10 problems on an algebra worksheet on solving equations with addition and subtraction. On this worksheet, he correctly answered 9 out of the 10 questions (90%). After completing the algebra work, the student made a journal entry. I supply the journal prompt. After the student wrote his journal entry, I had him read it to me aloud. Following the journal entry, I had him write a list of six adjectives and six nouns. Today's writing focus (suggested by him): the TV show "The Walking Dead." After he wrote his list of six adjectives and six nouns (nouns you would find on "The Walking Dead" TV program), I had him write a paragraph about "The Walking Dead" TV Show, to include the list of six adjectives and six nouns. After he finished writing his paragraph about the TV show, I had him read it to me aloud. His writing skills are strong, as he uses many adjectives and he is very descriptive in his written work. Following his writing of the paragraph, he completed a parts of speech worksheet. We are continuing to review the same parts of speech terms (learning through repetition). We will continue to review these parts of speech terms during our next tutoring lesson. He and I ended today's tutoring session with reading (aloud). I had the student read a one-page story titled "The World of Ansel Adams." He is a strong reader. After reading the short story to me, I had him complete a page of comprehension questions (to check for understanding). He understands what he reads. He is a very bright student. During our lesson, he was focused on the task at hand. Our tutoring session was very productive.

Phonics Tutoring review by Erica in Lansing, IL
Yesterday we worked on vocabulary and reading comprehension. He has an English test today, and we were prepping for that. He is really struggling with comprehending questions. He understand the stories and the meaning of the vocabulary words; it's just hard for him to comprehend what the question is asking him. I left him with example questions and example sentences of what he might see on the test today. I also told him to review the vocabulary and to skim over the stories right before bed.

The student and I continued work with sounds "mmm," "aaa," "eee," "sss," and "ttt" tonight. The "mmm" can give him a hard time as he forgets to close his mouth. We also worked with combining some of the sounds, practicing using phonics to sound out combinations. He gets excited and wants to move on to other sounds and letters that he knows. He loves to write the letters and is eager to make words.

Phonics Tutoring review by Abigail in Lansing, IL
The student and I continued working on body paragraph structure by using sample prompts to write paragraphs following PIE (Point -->Illustration-->Explanation) format. I had her write a few paragraphs and highlight the sections in different colors before explaining to me why she believed each sentence belonged in its particular section. She felt she had a strong grasp of the material following this exercise. We then moved on to talk about introductions, and I provided a handout with tips for writing introductory paragraphs and "hooks." We will continue talking about hook strategies and introductory information in our next session.

The student and I continued working on his writing/summaries, math review, and multiplication facts. He completed the activities from Lesson 9 in his reading book and worked on writing a summary on the piece. He also completed an addition review sheet, and we used the remainder of the time to work on multiplication flashcards.
