Session Summaries by Computer Science Tutors

Computer Science Tutoring review by Rebecca in West Valley City, UT
We spent this session reviewing the student's most recent midterm. She got a low B, which she is not entirely happy about, although she can still bring her grade up to an A- if she does well on the final. I noticed that almost none of her mistakes came from not knowing the material--they came from answering too quickly. She agreed and said that she had not had enough time to finish the exam, even working as fast as she could. She said she has test anxiety and tends to make mistakes when she gets nervous. I explained that the only way to combat this is to study even more, so that all of the concepts become second nature. I also advised her to talk to her professor about her current grade in the class, so she can have a specific goal in mind when she takes the final. We have two more sessions before her final exam, so we will use those to review all of the material she has covered in class, and make sure she is 100% confident about it.

Computer Science Tutoring review by Matt in West Valley City, UT
The student and I went over some concepts from Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus that he felt rusty on. We mainly focused on velocity and acceleration vectors in polar coordinates. He should drill himself on trigonometric identities and the rules for vector operations to help avoid careless mistakes when dealing with these sorts of problems.

We focused on working with parametric equations. We went through how to sketch the graph of a parametric function using a table of values. We practiced converting a parametric equation into rectangular format by using substitution, as well as using the Pythagorean trig identity if the parametric form had sines and cosines. We looked at converting a function in Cartesian format into a set of parametric functions by using x=rcost and y=rsint for circular functions or by setting one variable equal to t. We also reviewed how to put restrictions on t to give only part of a graph. She is doing better converting from parametric into rectangular as well as determining any restrictions on t.

The student had an excellent tutoring session. He is beginning to better understand how the 26 letters of the alphabet fit together to make words. He earned an ice cream from his grandmother for his good work.

Today we covered math and reading. In math, we talked about adding groups of ten. We also made one-digit addition flashcards for the one's, two's, and three's. Please practice these flashcards during the week to help the student gain confidence in math! In reading, we read about kangaroos and turtles. When answering questions, she worked on making her own sentences instead of copying a sentence from the story. Please encourage her to keep doing this, as it helps with spelling and grammar. She had a great attitude, as usual. Next week, we will work on more math flashcards.

Computer Science Tutoring review by Monica in West Valley City, UT
We started by singing the "ABC" song. We read four books: "Are You a Star?," "Children, Children, What Do You See?," "Let's Count Dinosaurs," and "Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom." We sang "One Little, Two Little, Three Little Dinosaurs." We played Numbers Bingo (1-10), Shapes Bingo, and Colors Bingo. We reviewed all the letters of the alphabet using the monkey puppet. Then, I had the student build her letters using the puzzle pieces I sent to them. She knows all her colors and shapes. She knows all her numbers, although she gets 6 and 9 mixed up, which is developmentally appropriate. She has made really great strides in letter recognition. She knows all her letters except for N, U, R, and V. As always, her brother participated on and off, and today he was doing so almost the entire time. He is recognizing more of his shapes and colors. He is still working on some of his numbers. He knows a few of his letters as well. The students have made some nice gains during our time together.
