Writing Tutoring review by Melinda in Taylorsville, UT
The student and I went over some of his pages from his butterfly packet and discussed the correct answers. We also read the Oregon Trail paper, worked on handwriting a paragraph, and he wrote an independent summary. He also completed an addition and a subtraction worksheet and we went over one of the writing skills activities. He is making great progress and I look forward to working with him over the summer!

Writing Tutoring review by McKenna in Taylorsville, UT
Went over science homework, which she already seemed to know. She's very good at giving examples of scientific functions, but struggles to put thoughts into words about the actual functions themselves. Reviewed Spanish flashcards for her test on Wednesday. She seems to have a good grasp on the vocabulary so far. Finally, reviewed her autobiography. Learned a lot of interesting facts about her today! After going through most of the paper, I am starting to narrow down and pin-point things that she needs a little help with. Most are grammar related, sentence level errors. Some difficultly with overall structure, but it was also a casual essay to see where she is with writing. Now that I know what she needs help with, I will break it down and dive into specific topics. Excited to see her be so enthusiastic about writing and sharing about herself!

We analyzed pages from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. We spoke about the themes and literary devices used by the author to expand on the themes of censorship and conformity. We mainly analyzed the tone Bradbury wanted to convey to the reader. We prepared an outline for an essay that the student has to write in class. We made a thorough outline with quotes, examples, and literary devices. The student seemed interested to learn more about the book and how it applies to today's society. In the beginning, she felt nervous with the assignment given. By the end of the session, she felt prepared and confident with the material and more knowledgeable about the book as a whole.

The student is Reading 'Freak the Mighty' for his writing class, and then has to write a book report on it. He had 80 pages left in the book (exactly halfway) and the report is due at the end of the month. We went over his options for the book report and narrowed down from six to three. We then did a couple exercises that will help him regardless of which option he chooses, and will hopefully make doing the report easier. I left him with the homework to complete the book (which I divided into six chunks ranging from 11 to 15 pages) by the time we meet next week. Once he finishes the book, I also requested that he choose what he wants to do for his book report. Assuming he is able to finish the book by next week, we will have two sessions for him to work on the book report before it is due.

Writing Tutoring review by John in Taylorsville, UT
The student and I covered grammar today. We looked at participial phrases, gerunds, adjectives phrases. We also looked at parallelism and word choice, followed by comma usage in lists and phrases. We will continue to work on his assignments where I can be of assistance with his grammar needs. We will meet again on Saturday.
