Reading Tutoring review by Hope in Taylorsville, UT
Tonight we covered some new vocabulary words. Using the new vocabulary, we studied hard and soft c and g sounds. We also covered making connections: text to self, text to text, and text to world. The student did well with focusing on the main ideas of a text and not adding in new details. She had a great attitude and used great questioning strategies to understand the text.

Today we continued our focus on short /i/ words. We did a variety of activities where the student got the opportunity to decode short /i/ words. As she continues to improve her decoding skills, we will shift some of our focus to developing her writing skills as well. We also reviewed short /a/ and /e/ words.

Reading Tutoring review by Adriana in Taylorsville, UT
Today we focused on the a PSAT reading passage and used strategies to answer the questions the followed the story. Specifically, we reviewed how to take the reading passage apart. It was a challenging session and the student did a good job reading the story and writing down her notes. There were a few words that were tongue twisters, but again I went back and we reviewed strategies from the previous weeks' sessions on reading the words. She was more confident this week. She is taking finals next week. She admitted that she sometimes went quickly through tests because her classmates were finishing before her, but now she is ignoring them and focusing on using the strategies I've shown her. Today we talked about visualizing a question to build comprehension. The PSAT passage was about inherent and learned behavior. I shared with her my "visualization" of the experiment mentioned to understand what the question was asking. This was a good session tonight.

Reading Tutoring review by Traci in Taylorsville, UT
The student spent most of our time wrapping up his reading book project. There were a few sections that he had not yet completed and a few things that needed just a little tweaking. By the time I left, he had only one section left to copy onto the project and then to finish the cover art. We also made a plan for completing all the other things that needed to be done this evening, like studying for his spelling test, reading quiz, and Bible verse, as well as preparing for the history test. Even though there are only a few days left, the teachers are not letting up on the workload, and he will even have finals next week. He is working hard.

Reading Tutoring review by Beckett in Taylorsville, UT
Her only homework was to read Chapter 6 of Number the Stars so I had her do that out loud. She said her teacher takes notes in class when they read aloud to see if they've been practicing, so it's good we've been doing so much practice. Her expression was good and she answered comprehension questions well. Then we did Repeated Reading, which we've taken a break from for about 2 months, and her scores were much higher: between 166 and 207 words per minute. That was very encouraging. Finally, we played hangman with all of the Unit 5 vocab words, and she got most of them without having to guess any letters.
