Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Jamie in Taylorsville, UT
We reviewed the concepts we went over in the previous session and covered the new subjects that were covered in the class lecture that day. We went over large macromolecules and the bonds that are found in each. The student had a little trouble remembering the functioning groups, but I helped jog his memory and he seems to have better recall. We will revisit and review at our next session. I believe I went more in depth than needed, but wanted to over-prepare him as he has a test next Monday. I plan to review and go over the material again and help develop strong study habits for the test in the next session.

Biology Tutoring review by Michael in Taylorsville, UT
Today the student and I talked about the immune system and the types of white blood cells. We went in depth covering the process by which a person goes from sick to cured. We talked about natural killer cells, antibodies, T-cells, B-cells, and many other types of immune system cells and how they work. We also watched a PBS video called "Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria," about antibiotic resistance and how antibiotics are losing their effectiveness. She is almost done with her assignment on antibiotic resistance, and then I will grade it with her. Our next session will be about the cardiac system. She was great to work with and very interested in the topic. I enjoyed working with her, and she understood the information very well.

Biology Tutoring review by Gustav in Taylorsville, UT
We went through the student's biology final exam review. In our session, we covered chapters 10-12 in detail. He retained quite a bit of the information from earlier in the semester, and was able to answer most of my questions. We started with a review of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which had been giving him trouble. The area where he was struggling most, not uncommon for high school bio students, is connecting what he learned in class to the real world. So he might know how mRNA is produced, but has trouble with questions like "How does the DNA in our cells instruct our body to do anything?" We will continue to work on this. Throughout the session, he was attentive. He's clearly a good student. I left him with the study guide I produced, and he will continue to study on his own. When I return next week, we'll spend as long as it takes to complete the review to get him an A on the exam.

Biology Tutoring review by Aimee in Taylorsville, UT
The student and I finished filling out her biology study guide and we reviewed topics that she was hazy on, particularly those from the beginning of the semester. She was confident with the last couple of units so we didn't spend as much time on those.

We went over the student's project for the longbodied cellar spider, including the phylum, 3-5 special characteristics, habitat, and the environment. We also went over the fish PowerPoint, specifically the types of fishes, what differentiates them, and their 7 essential functions (respiration, excretion, reproduction, circulation, response, feeding, and movement). I also quizzed him about the anatomy and the essential functions of fish for his quiz tomorrow.

We reviewed ecology on Tuesday and did a further review of environmental sciences on Thursday. The student was struggling with biochemistry ,so we reviewed enzyme function and structure. I plan to continue to review topics he is having difficulty with in order to prepare him for his final exam.
