Today we were able to write the letters of the alphabet and practice the letters f,k,m,n,v,u,x y and z. We also read sentences that contained CVC words-(consonant vowels consonant) words- e.g. cat, fat, dog, rug, man, map, has, sun, hot, fox and top. We also reviewed consonant blends bl, fl, cl, gl and sl. For practice student will circle the beginning blends for each picture.

We focused on number sense and counting. Today, the student brought home an alphabet book that she had made at school; during our tutoring session, we made a number book! First, we did a number match game in which the student matched all of the different representations of a number on the board (for example, 6 was represented with a number, as a word, on a tens frame, and with tallies). Next, we read aloud a counting book by Eric Carle, using the story to pivot to numbers in our number book. For the number book, we practiced representing numbers in a variety of different ways: numeral, word, picture, tallies, tens frame, part-part-whole. All of these strategies are used to develop the student's number sense as a rational counter. I was surprised to hear that the student was not familiar with the tens frame model or the concept of even/odd from her classroom. She is also not yet able to subtilize, which is a pre-number concept. We will work on these concepts moving forward.

The student first read six pages of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul." He always excels at reading and discussing these books. Although they have vocabulary that challenges him, he focuses very well and is able to sight read new words easily. He then studied words beginning with "wa" and "wor" before we moved on to writing. I assigned him a project of writing and illustrating a story. In this class, I helped him plan out the story and begin a first draft. He is looking forward to writing a story but I think it may be a challenge to encourage him to correct any sentence structure and spelling. However, I will work with him on this to help him finish a polished work and practice strong sentence writing.

We reviewed phonics for the entire alphabet. We also practiced spelling and reading words ending in "og" and "at" (dog, pat, log, rat etc.). The student has excellent recall and a sound grasp of phonics; he continues to gain confidence in his abilities.

Since we hadn't met for a while, the student and I reviewed some of the sight words she had been practicing previously, using an interactive game. Then, we practiced writing sight words and sounding out the words in a birthday card for her brother, which she wrote. We talked about when to use "big" letters and "small" letters in our writing. Lastly, we practiced with shape manipulatives, counting sides, and then counting sides as we added an additional shape. She has shown great improvements in her ability to count quantities without starting over from zero.

It's been a mutual minute since our last session. In the meantime, the spelling words have gotten a little more challenging. After the student wrote the words we did a practice spelling test where he only got 4 wrong. He'll be practicing with "shrink" and the other 3 words later as he took up the bulk of the hour writing the words 4 times each. The practice test will become a regular part of our weekly routine.
