Recent Wentzville Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Kari in Wentzville, MO
Today the student and I had a very productive session! I got to hear all about her invention. We started off by going over the practice test I gave her on Tuesday, which as a whole she did very well on. The only mistakes were minor adding mistakes within her multiplication methods. If she takes her time and checks her work as she goes, I think she could definitely get an A on her test. We then went over her homework, which she had completed without error! I gave her another practice test which I would like her to complete before our next session on Tuesday. We did one of each type if problem together, so she should have very little difficulty completing it. She understands each concept well. She just needs to take her time and neatly show her work. If there are any questions on the test, please don't hesitate to contact me!

We covered linear functions, average rate of change, and applications. The student just needs to be careful with parentheses and keeping up with the small details of equations. She seems to be getting most of the big picture concepts.

Tutoring review by John in Wentzville, MO
The student and I reviewed the topics covered in her course in the last three weeks. She showed competence in her understanding of the topics thus far. We discussed mainly functions, their domains/ ranges, and the different transformations that can be applied to parent functions. We reviewed the main six or seven parent functions that would be covered in her class' exams and quizzes. I highlighted which function types had special considerations regarding domains (radical and rational functions) as well as ranges (quadratic and absolute value functions). Regarding transformations, we talked about the two types: dilations and translations. We practiced determining transformations graphically and by analyzing the function equation. To wrap up the session, we learned how transformations affected the domain and range of each parent function.

We covered the problems on the previous exam, and found the errors made in order to prevent them from occurring again in the future. We developed an alternative preparation strategy for the next exam, starting with using the practice exam as an assessment to identify weaknesses, followed by making those weaknesses strengths.

The student and I got most of the rest of the way through his College Algebra final review today, covering systems of equations, systems of inequalities, Binomial Theorem, sequences, and applications. He had a bit of trouble remembering each concept, but he picked up the problems smoothly once he was reminded.
