How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or the PSAT, is the exam that precedes the SAT. It is also used as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). This exam helps prepare students who are going to take the official SAT. It familiarizes them with the format and types of questions that are presented on the SAT. If your student is thinking about taking the PSAT, they might enjoy the guidance of a professional tutor. PSAT tutors in St. Louis, MO, can help your student prepare for the exam. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help find your student a PSAT tutor today.

There are different versions of the exam that correspond with the grade your child is in when they take it. There are versions for students in 8th through 11th grade, which include the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, and PSAT NMSQ. All of the exams allow students two hours and 45 minutes to complete. There are two sections, just like the SAT, which are math and evidence-based reading and writing. If your child struggles more with math, it may be a great decision for them to have a private tutor to help them work through all the types of math problems that will be covered in this section. This exam can pull math concepts your child learned years ago, so they may likely need a refresher on these areas. Their tutor can focus the sessions around the subjects that your student needs to work on the most. In this way, St. Louis PSAT tutoring may help your child prepare more effectively than simply studying alone.

In this session, we worked through math review problems involving exponents and geometry (particularly circles and right triangles). We also reviewed additional grammar topics, including: passive voice, misplaced modifiers, parallel construction, 'not only, but also' + 'either, or' + 'neither, nor', 'which' vs. 'who', and adjectives vs. adverbs (and the most common mistakes people make in using adjectives in place of adverbs).

PSAT Tutoring review by Tara in St. Louis, MO
Today the student and I focused on the Writing portion of the SAT test. He reviewed some of the test's common grammar rules and strategies for homework last week. During our session he used these strategies to complete a practice test. After he completed the test, we calculated his complete diagnostic score in order to reassess our goals for tutoring. We also went through each test section to determine specific areas of focus for our sessions. Our first area of focus will be deciphering unknown words. He will complete a practice packet for homework, and we will cover numerous strategies next week.

PSAT Tutoring review by Nick in St. Louis, MO
We continued our work with math fundamentals and also looked into a few of the most difficult grammar concepts to master. We wrapped up with strategies to tackle sentence completion of the reading section when vocabulary seems unfamiliar. Because this was our final of two summer sessions, we did not leave off with any practice problems but will plan to pick back up with those during the Fall.
