I am a Saint Louis University Student in the Class of 2016 majoring in Investigative Medical Sciences and on the Pre-Med track. I've had a wide variety of experiences both tutoring and being tutored so I know the stresses and obstacles of both parties. I started tutoring without pay earlier in my college career at an organization called UrbanFuture that helps underprivileged students after school to increase their skills in mathematics, reading, and other academic subjects. Ultimately, the middle school program is geared toward preparing the students for the nationally standardized MAP tests. During my 2 years with UrbanFuture, I was able to develop different teaching methods and styles dependent on the student I was teaching. Everyone has their own special way to learn, it's my job to help you find that! From UrbanFuture, I proceeded to tutor with pay privately for my parents' colleague's children in elementary school in mathematics, science, and reading. From my years of tutoring, I have learned that the most success comes from developing a healthy and friendly relationship with my student that encourages pushing him/her to achieve what they previously thought they couldn't, while still staying within the student's comfort zone. Learning shouldn't ever become too frustrating! Aside from tutoring, I have been a referee at the YMCA. I enjoy playing and watching basketball and soccer. My other hobbies include table tennis, video games, music, movies, piano, cars, and socializing.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone can achieve academic success. It's just that not everyone has the same method of learning to get there. Experiment!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will first get to know the student and his/her interests. From there, I will try to gauge which type of learning works best for that person.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to help a student become an independent learner, is to teach them the concept so they feel confident and enjoy what they are learning. Application of the learning to real life is a good promoter!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way, in my opinion, to help a student stay motivated is to have them never forget the end goal or the possibilities of what's ahead if they continue to pull through.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break down the concept to find out where the student is having trouble with the skill or concept and focus on that particular issue.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help them by asking them what they think the reading is saying. Depending on their answer, I will explain to them what the reading is actually saying so they can compare their answer to what the author intends.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

A strategy that I have found successful is to never push the student to the point of discomfort. Always stay within the student's comfort zone so they don't become frustrated with the idea of learning!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

It is difficult to get a student excited about a subject that they may be struggling in. However, to improve their interest in the subject, one of the simplest methods is to offer appropriate incentives/rewards for questions attempted and questions answered correctly.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I help the student build confidence in a subject by acknowledging their progress, and explaining it to them so they acknowledge that they are progressing as well.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs based on how he is performing in the subject I am teaching, and also based on his mannerisms when being tutored. It's very important to gauge how the student is feeling while being tutored to know that he is still in his comfort zone while learning.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring based on the student's learning style. So first, I figure out what style works best for them, and I gear my tutoring methods around that form of learning. At the same time I continue to incorporate new methods of learning to see if the student responds well.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I prefer to use the classic paper and pencil to supplement my teaching. However, I am in no way against using other tools, such as electronic tools for online tutoring or computer programs.
