You can also work through each area as slowly or fast as you would like – your learning goals and needs are the focus of the session. If your teacher has been speeding through concepts far too fast for you to understand them, you can let your tutor know, and your tutor can review these concepts more deliberately. No matter your optimal pace, the goal is to help you understand what is being taught. On the flip-side, you may decide that you understand what is being taught in class and desire to get ahead a bit because your instructor is moving too slowly for you. Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Michael in St. Louis, MO
Today's session was a continuation of exam review for the derivatives chapter. The student seemed flustered by her performance on the first half of the exam on Monday, and I would like to work in the future on test anxiety. We focused on advanced and application problems where she showed improvement but not complete confidence.

Calculus Tutoring review by Nick in St. Louis, MO
We began our session by going over how to find the local minimum and maximum of functions as well as the differences between a local minimum and a global minimum. The student was having some difficulty with this material, but after practicing several problems, she was able to get a much better handle on it. We then applied the idea of minimization and maximization to optimization word problems. After we established that optimization was really just an application of what she had learned in the previous sections, things started to progress more smoothly.

Calculus Tutoring review by Travis in St. Louis, MO
The student and I worked on analyzing particle motion with functions involving displacement, velocity, and acceleration. We also discussed the differences between velocity and speed, as well as displacement and distance. The most difficult concept that he struggled with was how to use the information about the acceleration to correctly identify the changes in the behavior of the displacement and velocity.

The student did some problems on his own, and he asked me on the ones he was not sure about. It was mostly on section 1 related to finding the area under the curve using right ended-rectangles, left-ended rectangles, and using the midpoint. We also moved to section 2 using the power rule method to calculating the integral of various functions.

Calculus Tutoring review by Sean in St. Louis, MO
We went over logarithmic differentiation, while reviewing properties of logs and exponential functions discussed last time. The student said these ideas seemed a lot less intimidating now. After this, we discussed integration/anti-derivatives and starting going over the basics. Everything that we discussed we worked on with examples as well as me talking him through it.
