Recent Fruitland Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Bejoy in Fruitland, MD
This was the student's first session and we spent some time talking about what topics she struggles with and what her strengths are. She said she has difficulty with parallel lines and angles and today we started going over the angles formed when 2 parallel lines are cut by a transversal. She was very good with the math vocabulary and knew what transversal, congruent and parallel lines were. Her mental math was exceptional and she was able to do simple algebra equations in her head and did them all correctly. I taught her how to properly identify the different angles by using the vocabulary. She felt very confident with the topic after a bit practice we did using online worksheet. I thought by the end of the session she understood how to identify what are corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles and same side interior angles and what supplementary means.

Tutoring review by Nathan in Fruitland, MD
The student and I reviewed geometric series, alternating series, ratio test, as well as some basic integration methods, in preparation for his Calculus 2 final exam. I think he'll do well. He retains/recalls information well and is rather intuitive at problem solving.

Tutoring review by Caroline in Fruitland, MD
Today we started off by finishing the state exam review packet we had begun last time. The problems at the end of the packet were more focused on the material with which the student was struggling, so we worked in more detail on those problems, especially the ones involving tables. After that, we did an online review. The review mainly focused on material from the previous year, so it was not too much of a challenge. However, there were some concepts that the student needed a reminder on, so it was still good practice. After that we did a little more in depth work with solving quadratic equations. She does well with factoring when the leading coefficient is 1, but struggles in the more complex ones. However, she was able to solve some by writing out all of the steps, so I think it is more a matter of pressing all the way to the end of the problem. It seems that the student prefers to use the quadratic formula on these types of problems, which works well except for when she makes tiny errors. Most of the mistakes on the test she showed me were either because she left of the denominator or the negative sign. However, with repetition and focus this should not be too much of a problem. I also advised her to always check her answers using the graphing function on the calculator, especially on the state test, when she has such a long time to work.

Tutoring review by Raul in Fruitland, MD
The student and I covered conics, the geometry and algebra behind circles, parabolas, and ellipses. At first, we reviewed finding key points in these conics when given an equation. We then practiced graphing conics, given the key points and tangential lines. He did not show any struggles with the concepts within conics; he shows great confidence in his math! I did notice he often goes through problems too fast. With all the small details in algebra, this led to minor errors. I encouraged him to take his time a little, and assured him that being among the last to finish an exam is not a bad thing at all. I gave him our session's notes for later review.

Tutoring review by Chantal in Fruitland, MD
The student and I worked on algebra. She worked on problems from her textbook to prepare for her exam. We reviewed addition and subtraction of numbers with the same sign and opposite signs, the order of operations, using a number line to better understand how to add and subtract numbers with opposing signs, multiplication of decimals, powers, and understanding verbiage for conducting operations. Excellent session.
